Re: Why Should We Improve?
To be fair when I looked at the opening fixtures I reckoned we would be lucky to have 3 points after the first 5 games.
After six games i was forecasting 6 points so we are a little bit off that target. However, some of the PUMPINGS we have been on the end of is a real concern.

Kai Havertz , yes I saw that in match of the day, he must have wanted the ground to swallow him !banqo wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 12:22 pmKai Havertz didn't manage it yesterday.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 10:45 amYes he scored a goal from around a yard out, poachers goal but hardly a ''Bobby Dazzler'' of a goal was it !RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 10:41 am
We had the Summer to bring in a decent striker and on loan 19 year old Shaq Forde was the best we got . I like him ,he looks a good player and at least he's scored a goal .
Apparently the Arsenal fans dont like him at all ! Also the Kai Havertz poor misplaced pass lead to United's opening goal. Plus Saka had a really feeble shot at goal. Imagine the anger on here from some if Ruel had made similar poor goal attempts in an Os match !

You have to earn the right to play the way we want to and apart from Cambridge we haven't.

Re: Why Should We Improve?
Saturday was a big eye opener for RW, ML and the Board. Stevenage were so much better than us. I doubt we would have made a game of it if Ruel had scored, we got a pen and RW had picked a different starting 11.
Now they can see that they need to spend a lot more money on players than we have if we want to stay in L1.
As much as I hate Evans, I was impressed with Stevenage’s players, long ball or not. They will come close to getting promoted imo

Re: Why Should We Improve?
I agree. Stevenage looked really solid. Well drilled and hard working. I am still of the view we had the squad to win that game but we played poorly and Stevenage were tactically very good. I think they will be top six this season if they can keep everyone fit.DuvB wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 1:24 pm Saturday was a big eye opener for RW, ML and the Board. Why do you hate Evans so much, strange to hate a person so much who I presume you have never met in person ?DuvB wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 1:24 pm Saturday was a big eye opener for RW, ML and the Board. People saying we need to do this, we need to do that, but how do you tighten up a leaky defence?
Most goals conceded in the league so far.
How do you suddenly score more goals?
Saying it and doing it are completely different things.
We played well against Cambridge because they let's us, Sage didn't let us. Most teams wont let us.
Challenging few weeks ahead of us

Re: Why Should We Improve?
Whenever we fire a blank or lose the cry always comes up about another striker. The problems are deeper than that. It reminds me of the sticking plaster argument. I like Shaq and I think he'll score goals but he won't score and neither will others, if they're not provided with the openings. I think we have a team problem more than a striker problem.

Re: Why Should We Improve?
Thing is I don’t think having a watertight defence will win us games but scoring goals will and if you look back at last season I don’t think we scored more than 3 goals in any one game more than twice. If in a game you get your nose in front it helps to take a little more pressure off. Most of these posts have had good points especially about the defence. In hindsight (witch is a wonderful thing) we haven’t recruited in the right ares unfortunately especially up front

We knew last season we needed a goal scorer, why we have been unable to find a decent one I don’t know

Have to completely disagree with you I’m afraid. And you pretty much contradict yourself by pointing out our success last season despite our low goal scoring.Monkey Boy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 2:42 pm Thing is I don’t think having a watertight defence will win us games but scoring goals will and if you look back at last season I don’t think we scored more than 3 goals in any one game more than twice. All successful teams are built on strong defense.
The reason we were champions last season was our defense and control of games.
If you don’t concede goals you are very difficult to beat.
Obviously I would like a free-scoring team but if we want to climb up the league stopping all the weak goals we are conceding is the key.

Re: Why Should We Improve?
We signed a guy who scored 15 from the wing for a mediocre team last season but he is sadly injured which is no-ones fault. I expect that took a chunk of the wages budget and we can’t just get a replacement of the same quality.Story of O wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 2:49 pm We knew last season we needed a goal scorer, why we have been unable to find a decent one I don’t know

Yeah I thought that when I was posting it, all I can put it down to is sun stroke, yes your correct about being difficult to beat but you do have to score more than the other team to win. Re: Why Should We Improve?
Absolutely this, it's a zero-cost way to make us more competitive as even last season set pieces weren't particularly effective either.DrWindy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 10:45 amWe actually need to improve set pieces period. We don’t score from corners and we have a reluctance to target our centre backs when they come forward. I can’t remember the last time we scored from a corner, or frankly even got close.Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 10:40 am I don't think a shaky start to the season undoes the excellent previous 18 months we've had under Wellens. He needs to get more out of the squad he has, not bring more players in, and I am confident he will do that. Everything he's achieved with us suggests he's smart and flexible enough to make the step up, but there will be some bumpy moments like Saturday along the way.
We need to improve our defending at set pieces as that's a clear weak point, and need to figure out a way of becoming press resistant we we've been too easy to ruffle so far.

Re: Why Should We Improve?
before the Cambridge game, we were relegation candidates. After the Cambridge game we were gonna be fine and finish mid table. After Stevenage we are relegation candidates again.
I do worry. I think we've kept too many league 2 players on sentimentality, and the squad is too young. But this seesaw of opinions on how we will do is going to be exhausting.
We've had an absolutely rotten run of fixtures, illness and injuries and the fixtures only seem to get worse. The team can't let it dent their confidence.

Re: Why Should We Improve?
It has and will dent there confidence unfortunately especially loosing on Saturday as I think the previous two fixtures had given them a big boost. League 1or 2 I think its a question of attitude with players and how they adapt to the coaching or manager. We’ve had players over the years that have come here for a holiday and others that have gone on to bigger and better things. You really don’t know until the player settles

Richie has to adapt to the opposition more, take note of the scouts reports more, be willing to change formation and styles and try to be a little bit more robust. Bring in a decent forward in January if we are still out of the bottom four and possibly see if Harry Kane is home sick and is available for the second half of the season on loanComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:52 am Playing Devils advocate here........again, but as the thread says, why should we improve?
What can change, that will make us improve and win games on a regular basis?
We cant bring in anyone new for four months, so we're stuck without a decent goalscorer again, the defence is leaking more than a rusty old bucket, so what can happen to change whats been happening?
Any suggestions anyone?
And we brought in Piggot , who was all wrong for us and will end up going out on loan in Jan. Totally wrong typre of striker for RW style of team . Mystery signing , desperate signing ?
