I'd agree with the "not much should change" message but I think the mixed messages from the government is no accident. They can be seen to be sticking with the "stay home, protect the NHS" message whilst not really bothering to enforce the lockdown.slacker wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 9:50 am My personal view is not much should change of restrictions be relaxed this month, but you can sense there's more traffic and people about the last week than before, so I guess the will to keep lockdown is ebbing away in some people.
It doesn't help when there's mixed messages leaked from the Govt, and there's always some global evidence the lockdown isn't essential (e.g. sweden), and sectors of the economy are tanking, so I get it's a difficult call.
I’d guess it’s more to do with £sMick McQuaid wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 8:38 am Any lifting of restrictions has more to do with our dear leader's desperation to do something around VE day than it does with any scientific evidence. Hospital deaths are down to almost 200 a day, in about a fortnight there will be barely any deaths if this trajectory continues. The nightingale hospitals are empty. At what point would you ease things?Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 10:25 am There’s obviously a part of me that wants to be able to do SOMETHING aside from be at home and most of the people at work, as well as friends who are of similar age are fairly desperate for easing but realistic that it’s not really the time.
Not much has changed. It’s difficult. As I argued a month ago, it’s a big ask to enforce such a big change to every day lives. But you just HAVE to look at the long term. As tempting as it seems right now, like opening a Xmas present when you are 6 on Xmas eve, it’s a short term view and actually waiting a bit isn’t really gonna hurt and will give you a lot more benefits long term.
Imagine if it eases and we have to do this all again in June until September
I certainly do not yet. While there are still hundreds of deaths every day I do not believe it’s the right time. From local stories told to me in my area there are still people around that are abusing the lockdown asked of them. I believe the majority of people are still scared to go back to the normal way of live . This is going to take many months to achieve. The government has got to get the release of lockdown right. At this moment in time I have little confidence in that they will.
Why ignore other deaths? Definitely headed in the right direction but BECAUSE of lockdown. As soon as you lift it those numbers go up again.Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 11:15 amHospital deaths are down to almost 200 a day, in about a fortnight there will be barely any deaths if this trajectory continues. Every week on lockdown will probably mean an additional year of austerity.
Austerity is here to stay forever regardless.Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 11:15 amHospital deaths are down to almost 200 a day, in about a fortnight there will be barely any deaths if this trajectory continues. Serious question. How do you come to that precise conclusion?Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 11:15 amEvery week on lockdown will probably mean an additional year of austerity.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 10:25 am There’s obviously a part of me that wants to be able to do SOMETHING aside from be at home and most of the people at work, as well as friends who are of similar age are fairly desperate for easing but realistic that it’s not really the time.

Well yes it does. But that's based on pure guesswork too.
I haven't been following the other deaths, why aren't these people in hospitals?Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 12:15 pmWhy ignore other deaths? There’s certainly an argument for austerity and financial crashes causing more deaths but as it stands, f*** the economy. It’ll be alright if there’s another month lockdown.
Well austerity isn’t the only option. As we’ve seen, money is made up and turns out there is a ‘magic money tree’Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 1:00 pmI haven't been following the other deaths, why aren't these people in hospitals?Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 12:15 pmWhy ignore other deaths? The numbers infected will likely go up, they have to keep it manageable and those at serious risk should continue to isolate so that deaths can be kept down.
Austerity will mean misery for millions in all sorts of ways for years.
