The trans debate

Re: The trans debate
Sadly, I deleted Twitter 6+ years ago but apparently Dawn Butler has been launching some scathing attacks on there in response to the Cass report.
It didn’t weigh heavily enough on the scientific papers that agree with Dawn Butler’s view apparently and therefore it should be ignored

Re: The trans debate
Apparently Jordan Grey - the man who played piano with his penis on Saturday night live and sang about being a better woman than women - claims the Cass report is “far right” on the Joe Lycett show.
It’s truly laughable.

Re: The trans debate
Dawn Butler apologised for misleading the house by reading what Stonewall had said, then blames anti trans activists

She's as thick as mince, but I guess this is at least some acknowledgement. I think Owen Jones and Billy Bragg, among others, are still spreading misinformation on the report.
The excellent BBC More or Less has released this podcast on the matter:

Men demand to be considered for women’s roles. Yeah, women get a few too many opportunities for my liking.

To be honest, back in Shakespear's days, they always got blokes to play the female part - it's what he would have wanted, I reckon.CEB wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2024 2:52 pm Men demand to be considered for women’s roles. Yeah, women get a few too many opportunities for my liking.

The C4 documentary about “There’s something about Miriam” is quite an encapsulation in time for those who grew up in the noughties

Miriam: Death of a Reality Star – the true story behind new Channel 4 documentary
Miriam Rivera shot to fame on crass Sky One reality show There’s Something About Miriam

It was Big Brother that changed everything. Channel 4’s 2000 social experiment, in which 11 housemates had their every move caught on camera, was an instant success. It launched the new era of reality TV, spawning all new addictive formats that the public adored; Big Brother walked so smash hits such as Love Island, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and The Apprentice could run.
But for every reality TV format that flourished and thrived in this era came thousands that flopped. It turns out we won’t actually watch anything and everything; shows like Shattered, where contestants forced themselves to stay awake to be in with a chance of winning £100,000, didn’t take off. Neither did Touch the Truck – a Channel 5 series where 20 people had to hold onto a Toyota truck for as long as possible to win it.
However, perhaps the crassest and most critically panned programme that emerged from the primordial ooze of reality TV was There’s Something About Miriam. The premise saw ‘six red-blooded lads’ fly out to a £2 million Ibizan villa in the hope to impress ‘one stunning babe’. The twist? The Miriam in question, Miriam Rivera, was transgender.
There’s Something About Miriam was widely criticised, with the contestants on the series petitioning a lawsuit against the company that created the show. However, the tabloid press at the time squarely painted Riveria as the villain, despite being as equally exploited for entertainment as the contestants.
Now, a new Channel 4 series will explore Riveria’s tragic life, her time in the spotlight and her untimely death in 2019 in Miriam: Death of a Reality Star. The three-part documentary will look at the transphobia that was pervasive in the early noughties, and whether a show so cruel would be made in today’s arena of reality TV.

Re: The trans debate
This is the first I've heard of this, but it sounds as if Miriam was complicit in a pretty nasty attempt to deceive these six men in exchange for a shot at fame, and then found out about consequences. Obviously the show producers would have set out to exploit everyone, because that's just what they do. Is that it, or is there more to it?
Re: The trans debate
The noughties were awful for this sort of thing.
While the contestants and the star were both exploited by the show, the fact that goes unnoticed is that Miriam was consenting to romantic/intimate engagement with members of the sex he’s attracted to. The contestants were victims of deception, tricked into same sex intimacy.
That central issue with the show - the fact that sexual orientation is based on sex, not what a person believes about their gender identity - is something that now routinely gets lesbians labelled as bigots, and gets lesbian dating sites subjected to legal action by men who claim to be lesbians.
Stonewall itself has called for “sex by deception” to be decriminalised.
