Southgate has objectively been a good England manager up until this point. He's our second best ever behind Ramsey. Venables did a single home tournament and didn't get as far as Southgate did in 2021.
Venables was given one tournament and reached the semi final. We've had 8 years of winning nothing with Southgate. I find it a tad ironic that Southgate is lauded for making a final which Venables didn't, when it was Southgate missing a penalty that stopped Venables getting there.
So true.

I've speed read this thread so forgive me if I'm duplicating anything. Venables was special and produced what nobody before him could. Robson got us to the Italia 90 semi's but in truth we were dire and it needed a bit of a player power revolution to change things around. We drew our way through the group stage. After Venables we spent almost 20 years stumbling our way through the dark, but at about the 12 year mark the FA did a great thing and Southgate led the grassroots review into football. Because of the failure of a couple of expensive foreigners - and then Big at Sam's farce - Southgate stepped in and has been EXACTLY what we needed. Players turn up because they want to be involved in a way that none had before in the premier league era. He managed to get a reasonable spin out of willing players and on a couple of occasions we've had "if only" moments.
Within all of that, we have all known that tactically he's not the sharpest tool in the box and football has moved on from 2016. That's Pep's fault (in part). Southgate is old school by comparison - even Ritchie Wellens is sharper tactically - and now is the time for him to step aside. He should not be burned at the stake for any failure to win things, but thanked for restoring national pride in our team. God only knows who can continue this feeling but Southgate's time is done.
As an aside, Southgate having mapped out the future of grassroots / youth football has helped produce a vibrant product in England. Instead of taking an ill-fated job at Man U or somewhere similar, he should get a very senior job in managing our game. Make him head of the FA - or the independent regulator that has been talked about. He cares about our game and its showed from the moment he missed that penalty in '96.
There is some truth in what you have said, but I look at the players he’s had at his disposal over the last five years or so and to my mind we have had yet again a waisted generation as we did when Erickson was in charge. It’s been many a year since we have had players (English players) plucked from the premiership by Spanish and German league clubs I only wished that they could have plucked Southgate
Yes tactically he’s inept imo always has been always will be,who else would put two kids on to take penalties in the last minute of a cup final or try experiments(Arnold) in a cup comp. You don’t have to scout the England team to know how we are going to play. However he will now be forced into trying something different and we will probably
win our next game and all will be well again.NOT. Here is the contentious part, to my mind Wellens is becoming a little similar in his tactics and formation,433 nearly every game. And just for the record I do think Wellens is the best manager we have had for some time. If we don’t get El Miz then I think he will as per Southgate have to rethink this season.

Am I in the minority? Probably. I would prefer England did not win the Euros if it meant going ahead and then playing so negatively. I would rather watch England outplaying the opposition and eventually losing narrowly. Imagine the public celebrations if the former scenario happened, would be hollow in my eyes. We should celebrate the Hoddles, not the Kalvin Phillip’s. This tournament should be a fraternal celebration of what is good about the game of football, not a war-like siege.

I'm with you on this also need Southgate gone which would be hastened by our exit.
Watching the Belgium game last night was a pleasure, who wouldn’t prefer to see that sort of football.
Some don't care as long as they win, it is supposed to be an entertainment, not a bore fest

I can't begin to imagine how much of a winge people would have if England lost to f*cking Slovakia in the opening game.

Moaning about England never winning anything then claiming you wouldn't celebrate if we won without playing a team full of Hoddles (how many international tournaments did he win, can't remember?)
As for "we should celebrate Hoddles not Kalvin Phillipses...so ridiculous to compare those two completely different types of player. We already celebrate Saka, Bellingham et al, really silly to pretend we don't.

Something akin to when we lost to Croatia or Italy after chucking the games away.
Barely hung on to a draw against Denmark and who knows what the Slovenia game will bring.

For me it’s not so much the results, it’s the manner in which we play that frustrates me, but as I posted before, Kane doesn’t look interested in the first two games……….comparing him to Kevin de Bruyne is like chalk and cheese.

I mean, it literally is because they play in completely different positions.
Half the people on this thread have to be on a wind-up, surely?

Stunk the tournament out really. Poor team who got what they deserved for such a negative set up each game, 5-4-1 with Adams running around alone up top was so bland compared to how most other teams have played.

Have Scotland just exited another tournament without having scored a single goal?
(Obviously, own goals don't count)

Really ? To be fair to Scotland they have at least given it a go . That's more than can be said for England . Don't be surprised to see England follow Scotland out the exit on Tuesday night .

Scotland we’re not good enough, really poor and got what they deserved, 4th in a group of 4 and once again didn’t qualify, in a tournament where it is almost impossible not to qualify.
3 games 2 defeats, 1 draw, no wins, 7 goals conceded, and only 2 goals scored, both deflected OGs
Bye bye Scotland

VA-farce on full display tonight. So they can overrule a good goal for a millimetre offside or inadvertent brush of a hand but not even review a CB clattering a striker clean in on goal?

Great point. They should have played more like say France or Spain.

I just don’t understand how that wasn’t even looked at.

It was def a pen, don’t understand why VAR didn’t send ref to monitor??
But Scotland would have missed it anyway, not possible to get a deflection when taking a pen

In a match they had to win they didn’t manage a single shot on target. That sums them up.
