Is it British Gas (including Scottish Gas) who were doing the old "fire and rehire" with their engineers to reduce their pay and conditions? Think it was them.

European natural gas closed yesterday at a fresh all-time high after rising >10%. At the close, the barrel-of-oil equivalent cost for European gas was $170 (~$29 per mBtu).
Things may be about to get a lot worse.

^ and we're not even at winter demand peak yet. The implications of this are huge.
What was it PW said yesterday about things being unlikely to get worse?

This will hit us next year. Post-April energy tariffs and reduced availability of ammonia for fertiliser manufacturing for starters.

For historical context:

and why is the price going up?
Re: Energy prices

Because reasons. There is a global shortage combined with increased demands and with the UK being particular exposed to reduced storage facilities, supply chain disruption, and poor performance from wind turbines. Also, Russia is squeezing its distribution to Europe so we'll all be fighting over what's left. And, if that's not enough, the British controlled section of the North Sea has seen a drop off in gas extraction.

It never really went away - became part of EDF Energy after privatisation, switched to wholesale distribution network only, then got sold to Far East energy fat cats and got renamed to UK Power Networks. Their name’s not on your bill but it’s them that get yr South East leccy from power station to end user.

One of our problems in a Democratic Society, is the fact we have Elections every 4 or 5 ( often much more frequently ) years. This encourages Governments to only look at short term problems and totally neglect long term strategy.

Not right. It doesn't matter what the frequency of the election is if the govt ideology is to let the markets decide. Capitalist markets are predicated on short term returns.
A good example if this is how private equity operates in the UK on a three year cycle and in the process bleeds viable businesses dry.

Sh!t.
Another surge in prices. 40% in one day. And the colder months have barely started.

These recent rises won't filter through to consumers for a few months yet. But when they do... it is going to be brutal.
We're more likely to notice the impact on industry before it tears a new bumhole into our energy bills.
I'm taking most of the current problems on the chin. But this has the potential to seriously f*ck everything up.

Let's get the Ruskies in manage it. Their oligarchs can do a lot better than we can.

Retail prices already moving to this news. Based on typical usage, the cheapest fixed price deal you could get one month ago was £1,177. Today it is £1,700.

Right now it doesn't really matter. Just go with whoever is offering the cheapest per-unit price. If they go bust you'll be auctioned off through Ofgem to whatever is left of the domestic market. Whatever you do, do not lock yourself into a fixed tariff right now.
