Wonder what changed Ruels mind, Happy he's signed because he can be quality and is our only forward with that little bit of spark. As for losing Ekpeteta not too bothered, because we should be able to replace him.

Having Ogie.Jobi and Ruel re-sign this summer is a good result.

Neither so inevitable after all, it turns out. :D

So in the end, only Ekpiteta didn't sign up, and he ran his contract down to move up a division.
Great to see Ling finally get the job done. It is what he is paid to do after all.

I bet you don’t laud the dustmen when they empty your wheelie bin.

In the interview he references Jobi.

But it’ll mainly be down to other offers not materialising, or us finally matching the wage he thinks he’s worth, you’d guess.

What rift was that? The one created by Sotiriou not turning up for testing and the first week of training without telling the club?

Or the one created by Ling's offer not being at the level that Sotiriou wanted (and eventually got closer to)? We can keep tracing the chain of causality back until we get back to the ultimate cause, which was Ling (and Embleton)'s failure to value the player appropriately throughout the season - reflected again in the contract put in front of him. Ling gets paid a lot more than Sotiriou to make those kinds of decisions, and he is given a lot of authority to make them too. We should expect better. Sotiriou did, and he was right to.

Or the one caused because Sotiriou was holding out for better offers from elsewhere. Or because Sotiriou had unrealistic expectations of what he should be paid or clauses he wanted in his contract.

Like you, I have no evidence of the reason but you speaking with such certainty only goes to show your bias in this when there are numerous potential reasons on both sides (Orient and Sotiriou, rather than Ling and Sotiriou) that this was not agreed earlier.

What Ling is paid compared to Sotiriou is irrelevant. A mutually agreeable contract was signed and Sotiriou now will be rejoining the squad. We got to the desired outcome. What exactly could have been better about this given that a new contract has been agreed, we've only just started preseason and it hasn't impacted our season?

How do you know I have no evidence? I wouldn't speak with such certainty if I didn't, and you can trust me on that one too.

We disagree, that's fine. But bias can run in both directions. You're perfectly entitled to trust Ling, as Travis does. I happen to think that's an error of judgment, and that there is a growing weight of evidence (much of which is public, and some of it is in the gossip which runs freely amidst football's professionals) to suggest we shouldn't. Time will tell, but I'm not looking forward to watching the club continue to under-perform with him still in a key role... and others in the club hierarchy are beginning to think the same.

Next year may end up being another free pass, as so many other clubs will be in even deeper sh*t than us. But with the resources we have, and the off-field leadership, there's really no excuse for us not be in the top 7.

If Sotiriou was after a massive pay increase Ling was right to negotiate the offer down.

It ain’t a good look for a DOF with 30 years experience in the game to be mugged off by a 20 year old kid with a handful of professional appearances. No-one seems to have considered this point

Fair enough. But he wasn't after a massive pay increase. The issue was more about game time than money.

And Ling didn't have to say anything publicly at all - the risk of him getting publicly mugged off only came about because he started trapping off about the situation. It really should have been handled behind closed doors - transparency is generally good, but there are some people who don't respond well to being opened to scrutiny, and Ling is one of those (I refer the Rt Hon gentleman back to the event when he was asked to explain the Fletcher fiasco). Anyway, I think we're getting into mountain/molehill - angels dancing on the head of a pin territory here. The Ling / Sotiriou thing is quite minor in the great scheme of things.

Ling was a decent footballer and I guess a great family person and loyal employee but I really think he be best not making any further interviews - he is prone to use the wrong words or phrases and like the QA he ain't helping himself - if the owners read these boards can't they help the club by limiting his exposure verbally
I think they have been. It's one of the reasons he has a back-office role (DoF), because he's not comfortable dealing with the press/fans anymore (and I do sympathise with that!). Which makes it all the weirder that he was wheeled out for the Sotiriou thing - which immediately created a whole lot of discord and ill feeling. Perhaps (as implied by Millennial Snowflake elsewhere) his ego was pricked by Ruel's impertinence, and he wanted to re-assert his authority. Which would suggest his insecurity is still an issue for his success in this role.

I don't necessarily trust Ling, I can just see many reasons for the situation on both sides. For example as far as contractuals go the only thing I see mentioned is salary when term wasn't mentioned at all, or even much about release clauses.

Don't agree about top 7 but without wanting to seem like I'm nitpicking I'd at least expect a top half finish based on progressing.

Also, us being in less deep sh*t than other clubs is at least partly down to the way ours is run, which you seem to underrate for some reason.

Not sure of the exact reason that Sotiriou did not turn up for testing and first week of training but maybe you do. My guess is that when the dates for season starting and pre season training begining were announced the clubs contract offer or any new offer were still short of what Ruel or is agent were asking for. Putting him on a weekly contract allowed negotiations to continue with the safety net of financial reccompence if Ruel left the club. The club probably realised that he was a potential transfer assett and they may have upped thier contract offer but only on a two year instead of three year deal. For Ruels part thier was possibly a certain club who had approached him with better terms but they are presently not in a position to proceed with a transfer deal. Both parties club and player could probably have handled things better and i hope the club in future are more pro-active with contract offers for our better players, espescially home grown.

Probably offered two years to make a offer nearer to his expectations. If he has a decent season will be gone in twelve months, every one's a winner financially.

Red, why do you think that, although you could be right. I know when you enter your last year of contract any potential buying club could try to knock the price down so 3 years sounds sensible.
My reasoning is that the club have gone way above what they would normally pay a young inexperienced player but to lose him for next to nothing is bad buisiness. In a nutshell they could not afford to pay what they are paying over 3 years.

No, that's precisely my point! I don't underrate it at all - in fact that was why I said we should be in the top 7 (see above). Let me expand: last season we had a top 8 budget, 3rd largest crowds at home, some of the best revenues in the division, extremely supportive owners/investors - and all this was before COVID damaged other clubs much more than it damaged ours.

In his third year, he wouldn’t be a young inexperienced player.

With 2 years, we’ve basically got him for this coming season then will sell him next summer. I’m sure we wanted him for longer than that.
