So, are we in the realms of the 'unthinkable'?

That is, is Putin withdrawing troops so that he can use tactical nukes in said areas?

Dunno. It looks like a tactical retreat to allow them to regroup and build up men and materiel as they are literally being slaughtered.

There's no real strategic or tactical advantage to using nukes in this conflict. I'd be very surprised if they are used.

The Russian supply lines are struggling, their troops are underequipped and demoralised and they were banking on a Trumpian-style Republican resurgence in the US mid-terms.

What was interesting was that Putin has stepped back and let Shoigu make the announcement. He's distancing himself from this and allowing the defence minister (who until recently he has undermined and bypassed) to "own the moment". That suggest that Putin is now aware of the scale of this disaster and is contemplating the prospect of defeat. You have to remember that his only source of information up to this point has been FSK reports which, by the time they have filtered up through the chain of command, will have been carefully edited.

But, this could still be a long way from over. Russia has the numbers and, while it is not generally reported, Ukraine has suffered horrific levels of casualties too.

I read the retreat pessimistically as Putin no longer micromanaging the war and letting the actual experts make the decisions. It sounds as if it so many of their decisions have been driven politically and not by what was militarily advisable. If they actually let the generals who know what their doing run things, that can't be good for Ukraine.

Some well considered responses -thx.

My overarching fear is that Putin is not going to go quietly and would do anything to re-establish his profile as the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I fear that people like him don’t give a toss who they take down alongside; he’s already got more blood on his hands than I could deal with, so why not a few hundred thousand more?

This has the potential to trigger article 4, not 5, of NATO. If all is confirmed, this likely to see significant increase in arms supplies to Ukraine. We're not going to war yet.

Maybe now is the right time. The Russians are all over the shop and there for the taking. Once they've been taught a lesson then it's onward to China and world peace will be secured.

This is true.

Remember Saddam - they kicked him out of that Kuwait but stopped short of piling in properly and finishing the job (and him). That let him build up all those WMDs that threatened our way of life. Simple lesson - when you've got the whip hand keep whipping.

The thing about invading a country because they have WMDs, is that you only do it if they don't have WMDs. Otherwise, they might just use those WMDs.

Quite right. Although, there'll be no need to go after China. I reckon they'd join in and grab Eastern Siberia.

Sorry but we can't have sovereign nations invaded by rogue states like China. Only a peace loving NATO is allowed to do that under world law.

Has that been confirmed?

I've read that it may have been a Ukrainian air defence missile that was launched to intercept the incoming Russian rockets. Hopefully it will cool some of the heads calling for escalation. However, Ukraine would be launching air defence missiles if they were not under attack by Russia in the first place.

In this game, do away goals count double?

Extra time or straight to penalties?

Does winner play off against China?

A missile from a non-NATO country landing in a NATO country and killing NATO state members? Surely we need to escalate against Ukraine.

All for one and one for all. The NATO motto has never been more relevant.
