Taking the politics aside for a moment, I’m going to have to admit that I quite liked the no commentary & no punditry format of MoTD.
I was hoping I would hate it but I can’t lie, nothing but the key highlights and some crowd noise was a very decent watch.

I'd rather watch empty stadiums with covid crowd effects .

You’re right, Tuffers. The worst Khan was the one in Star Trek … nasty piece of work!

Agreed. It’s only a shame that we can’t go back and cancel Mohammed Ali and Jesse Owens for their political nonsense.
Still, you can do your bit and stop posting your regular links about how the country is going down the pan on this football forum, can’t you. Show us how it’s done.

I'm watching the MOTD highlights on Sunday morning. I genuinely quite like it.
If they do go back to commentary and punditry, I'd be quite happy if they kept that for Saturday night, and give us this version for Sunday mornings.

^Having given it further thought, I'd also like to suggest a third version. One where the commentary and punditry is provided by non-experts/ex-pros. I reckon that could be unintentionally entertaining.

Am wondering where this will end up.
Can’t see the BBC under Davie can back down, for he has made impartiality a key policy, and if his highest paid presenter is allowed to transgress that then it’ll be a free-for-all. Lineker seems to be refusing to be gagged, he doesn’t need the BBC pay at the end of the day.
Unless something changes I see no solution other than Lineker will leave the BBC. All his show boycotting mates there will then have a decision to make. Sure they can all walk and cause some short-term disruption, but most aren’t anywhere near Lineker’s privileged financial position, and at the end of the day there are only so many sports reporting roles in the media. In time they can all be replaced at the BBC and at less cost to the licence payer.

BBC backing down but finding a way of framing it to be less damning is what I’m expecting. It’s clear they’ve made a massive mess of this, and the impact of losing Lineker over this will be worse than backing down

The BBC are undermined by their own inconsistencies and hypocrisies, as well as some alleged ambiguities in Lineker's contract.
They should either enforce their policies consistently (including Sugar, Pakham, Neil, Robertson, Johnson etc) or accept they've f*cked it and find a way to back down.
The latter can still be handled with a short statement that, having now had the opportunity to further clarify things with Lineker, he'll be back in his role. Then let the passage of time work its healing magic.
Or they can double-down.

Basically, doubling down would escalate the story further, and from across the spectrum there would be plenty of examples of people who work with the BBC expressing opinions, to the point of making their position untenable, while also amplifying the idea that if you pick and choose your expectations about impartiality, that’s not at all impartial.
The noises from the BBC, including the cringey “we’re in listening mode” comment, suggests that they’re looking for a way out. I would expect they recognise that the only real way of getting out of this self inflicted situation is to publicly recognise that the Lineker incident has highlighted their own issues, and that they will tighten up/review impartiality where it matters, and abandon the idea that they can or should control speech where it doesn’t. I suspect all Lineker will be asked to do is to add “views my own” on his Twitter

Sky now offer a more balanced and progressive coverage than the BBC about these related matters. Perhaps the Right will in fact succeed in cancelling the BBC…

That’s basically it. Other organisations can outflank the BBC however it suits them to do it.
Expect to see “the BBC” (the institution) and “The BBC” (the current custodians of it) conflated so that the failings of the latter can be used to further undermine the resources and reach of the former.
Hearing TalkSport presenters engaging in schadenfreude yesterday in between the insidious normalisation of constant references to football betting odds was a bit grim.

I don't normally listen to TalkSport but fair play to Max Rusden & Charlie Baker for having the always brilliant Zoe Gardner @ZoeJardiniere on to attempt to inform their audience about the wider issue
