Sadly not.
Ok, if it's not Gilso trying to do one of his Alf Garnettesque bigoted 'characters' (which he does so well, to his credit), then it's another already known bigot from previous boards.

You wouldn't believe the amount of times I've seen an Off the Hook post and thought to myself 'when did I type that?' before realising it wasn't me.

In my younger days a group of us, black and white, used to hang about on the local estate.
Quite often a SPG van used to come slowly up the road, stop, line us all up against a wall and search us.
Did it annoy us? Yes. Did it stop trouble? Who knows as carrying knives was not the problem it is now and none of us ever carried one. Did it cause us any permanent harm? No

None of us ever gave any mouth back either as back then the police were not as soft as they are now and liable to give you a slap.

Can I ask you how you felt about the police at the time, as a result of these actions?

It's asking for speculation, I suppose, but would you and your pals have been likely to pass on information to the law - contribute to their "intelligence" about goings on around the estate - or did you tend to view them as the enemy. Did they win your "hearts and minds"?

No, they didn't win our hearts and minds and none of us would have passed on any information but the police are there to uphold law and order not make friends. I think anyone who truly sees them as an enemy is someone with something to hide.

Thank you - that's interesting, but not entirely surprising.

I think the police must try to balance the need to uphold law and order as well as to keep the trust (and permission) from the public in order to keep their intelligence gathering. Now more than ever we need the police to be in a position to find out when the bad guys are acting. That's not necessarily "making friends" - just keeping the community (all the community) onside, so that everyone recognises that they're here to protect and serve us all.

It's just people management. The better you treat the police (in any/many of your interactions with them), the better they tend to treat you. Some people learn that lesson early on in life.

Sure, there will always be exceptions to the rule, but it's a tactic that got me out of many tricky situations in my youth.

Which was about 10ish years ago.

If only we were all just nicer to each other then everything would be fine.

Somebody should teach the police that valuable lesson.

That one who does a dance at the Notting hill carnival every year, he gets it.
