These aren't "bad times" - they're extraordinary times.

I think I'd prefer a UBI as a solution, so if workers are laid off they can still survive. While not ideal, at least this is providing an incentive for businesses to keep on staff rather than just firing them (as has been happening for the last week or two in hospitality, for example). Margin in hospitality is so tight, and labour is the biggest cost, so if you can persuade businesses to keep their staff on, that, to me, is a good thing.

Alternative would be to make it illegal to lay people off, and then they'll just go bankrupt

What do you mean “Disgraceful” . These are very worrying times . Nobody could have seen the situation we currently find ourselves in . It’s not bailing out as you describe it its keeping people in work.The package put out by the government yesterday was necessary to protect jobs and allow people to stay at home if necessary. If we have to pay more in the long run to protect lives then so be it

The government knows if they lost people to the job market they would have no means of paying back all the debt they have accumulated. Every man, women,child and CEO is being bailed out like the banks were in 2008. The Tories have been socially liberal for years and now, they are not only fiscally liberal, they have policies that would make Corbyn blush. What do you mean, nobody could have predicted this. There is a black swan event every 10 years. Companies should have contingency for such an event rather than blowing every penny on the directors and shareholders. Some work is underway to produce more equipment with the F1 racing teams with their state of the art machines and expertise are producing parts for ventilators. The aerospace companies are doing the same sort of work. The company that makes the machines now has been given military technicians to increase production levels.

All of this will help in the longer term but nothing will get back the missed opportinities. Allowing the Cheltenham racing to go ahead, an international event that helped spread the virus especially to Ireland. Allowing football and rugby to go on for weeks longer than it should have. The biggest of all being not talking to a wide enough circle of people, it shows when it is your own back benchers pointing out the failings of your latest statement. I think this has happened the times this week.
