Re: Coronavirus
But wouldn't it be businesses casting people adrift? In good times business is happy to take the profits, now in bad times they want a bailout.

Re: Coronavirus
Social distancing restrictions need to be in place for "at least most of a year" to control the spread of coronavirus, according to experts (SAGE) advising the government about the pandemic.
How can you play football in late April if this is right? Have to be behind closed doors for a very long time.

Re: Coronavirus
These aren't "bad times" - they're extraordinary times.
I think I'd prefer a UBI as a solution, so if workers are laid off they can still survive. While not ideal, at least this is providing an incentive for businesses to keep on staff rather than just firing them (as has been happening for the last week or two in hospitality, for example). Margin in hospitality is so tight, and labour is the biggest cost, so if you can persuade businesses to keep their staff on, that, to me, is a good thing.
Alternative would be to make it illegal to lay people off, and then they'll just go bankrupt

Yep. All businesses have done in the last few years is reward shareholders, buy back stock and pay huge renumeration packages and now, when they should have money aside to cover stuff like staff wages, they have not and need bailing out. F ing muggins here and like the banks in 2008, will be paying for it again. The Conservative party. Don’t make me laugh. Finding it hard to feel for the self employed TV people moaning about their treatment when they spend 365 days a year claiming every penny back against tax or make themselves a company in order to pay less.

Re: Coronavirus
What do you mean “Disgraceful” . These are very worrying times . Nobody could have seen the situation we currently find ourselves in . It’s not bailing out as you describe it its keeping people in work. The package put out by the government yesterday was necessary to protect jobs and allow people to stay at home if necessary. If we have to pay more in the long run to protect lives then so be itBeradogs wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 7:18 pmYep. Re: Coronavirus
It is bailing out. People have been living beyond there means for years. The government knows if they lost people to the job market they would have no means of paying back all the debt they have accumulated. Every man, women, child and CEO is being bailed out like the banks were in 2008. The Tories have been socially liberal for years and now, they are not only fiscally liberal, they have policies that would make Corbyn blush. What do you mean, nobody could have predicted this. There is a black swan event every 10 years. Companies should have contingency for such an event rather than blowing every penny on the directors and shareholders. Our choice at the next election is between two hard left socialist governments. Fact.

I don’t think so.

Re: Coronavirus
UK death rate is now jumping up at a terrifying speed. Reports of hospitals in south London already reaching near capacity and there being nowhere near sufficient protective kit, ventilators or trained staff. The reality of this - not the inconvenience but the terrible human toll - looks like it's about to set in properly.

Re: Coronavirus
Some work is underway to produce more equipment with the F1 racing teams with their state of the art machines and expertise are producing parts for ventilators. The aerospace companies are doing the same sort of work. The company that makes the machines now has been given military technicians to increase production levels.
All of this will help in the longer term but nothing will get back the missed opportinities. Allowing the Cheltenham racing to go ahead, an international event that helped spread the virus especially to Ireland. Allowing football and rugby to go on for weeks longer than it should have. The biggest of all being not talking to a wide enough circle of people, it shows when it is your own back benchers pointing out the failings of your latest statement. I think this has happened the times this week.

Re: Coronavirus
Much as I want to believe that companies with no history of producing precision medical equipment can suddenly start knocking it out, at volume, from a standing start - I reckon we'll look back on this and say this particular idea was fanciful from the very beginning.
