Re: Coronavirus
COBRA meeting tomorrow afternoon. If the increases tomorrow are the same as today, expect the process to close schools etc, including stopping attendances at football, to begin.

they may as well postpone the entire season as most of the clubs need the matchday revenue to stay afloat.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:19 amWould the EFL play league games behind closed doors ?The Mindsweep wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:37 pm COBRA meeting tomorrow afternoon. it'll depend on how long they are willing to try to keep it going to try to get the most money out of the situation, as sadly i think that it'll be a toss up between the needs to the economy compared to the needs to the people.

US travel ban to Europe excluding the UK. Methinks they know we're gonna do likewise, so today's the day folks.

Big move from the US.
My wife works in education and they've been told it's a matter of when, not if, they close.

Me to Dunners, we thought they would try to get as close to the Easter holidays as possible, so next Friday would mean 4 weeks including the hols. Then they could decide on what to do about the exams. Looks like it will be a week earlier.

And his wife has it.

Re: Coronavirus
Given the relatively low number of people with this, and the huge number of billions of people In the world, does anyone else think it’s odd that so many ‘celebrities’ have it?

Re: Coronavirus
It's not just the UK, its non-Schengen countries. Given that hyper mobility and long incubation periods are a major risk of this, it's not a completely unreasonable step, even if it really requires to be done in tandem with other moves.NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 9:54 amAs of 11th March, of the 31 Countries within the EU/EEA, the UK ranks in 6th position for Corona Virus cases. The Mindsweep wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 5:35 am US travel ban to Europe excluding the UK. I never claimed it was identical to sars .Mick McQuaid wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 9:35 pm Tuffers, it depends how and what you're counting, the point, i think also made by Bill Bryson, is it's largely meaningless.
Of course it shares lots in common with other vituses and for a variety of reasons warm weather will help but saying it's 90% identical to SARS like there is an obvious conclusion to draw from it is nonsense.
I don't claim any great knowledge, but knowing the difference between DNA and RNA was GCSE in my day.
As for bryson & dna virtually everything on the planet consists of x % carbon then the rest is made up of
Half a dozen basic ingredients.
There was a great interview with some guy from some scientific research lab
on the news the other day discussing viruses , he said basically every living
thing is a biology box creating there own viruses, which 99. 8 % were non lethal , in fact they helped the creation & continuation of life in the most part.
Occasionally a virus filters through that can not be dealt with by a different species &
thats how things like corona virus happen .
A Fascinating world of possibility .
Meaningless indeed, until you catch something that might kill ya .

Re: Coronavirus
I don't understand why flu (a virus from animals) is not classed as a pandemic (maybe because they don't name it after a beer). Average Uk deaths 17000, 3% chance of dying. So around 1% of the population 500,000+ catch this every year.tuffers#1 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:41 pmI never claimed it was identical to sars .Mick McQuaid wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 9:35 pm Tuffers, it depends how and what you're counting, the point, i think also made by Bill Bryson, is it's largely meaningless.

So Corona is insignificant currently. But why are governments so scarred?

Re: Coronavirus
Tbf most of the people who have got tickets for this are liable to be of a certain vintage and in an at risk group.
