Lisa Nandy would vote to abolish the monarchy
IMO, the Monarchy is an outdated institution and if nothing else needs to be drastically downsized. If a referendum was held on the subject, I would vote at the very least to downsize it and by doing so would risk the wrath of my elderly Cousin who is a staunch royalist and has pictures of many of the past monarchs throughout her house !

Labour leadership candidate Lisa Nandy has said she would vote to scrap the monarchy.
Ms Nandy said that the issue would not be a priority for Labour under her leadership, but that as a democrat she would not vote to keep the royal family. Asked in a series of quickfire questions how she would vote in a referendum on keeping the monarchy, Ms Nandy replied: “I’m a democrat, so I would vote to scrap it, but actually this is not the priority as a country.”
Sir Keir said: “I wouldn’t. I think I’d downsize it and Long-Bailey said: “I wouldn’t vote to abolish the monarchy. I’d quite like to see Queen Meghan at some point.”The exchange came in a live TV debate on Channel 4 just days after the field to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader was slimmed down to three on the elimination of Emily Thornberry on Friday.

Good on her.
Just think what we could do with all those palaces if we took them back.

Re: Lisa Nandy would vote to abolish the monarchy
Yes agree, look how all the show business ''luvvies'' are now flocking over Harry and Meghan, Elton John giving them free rides to go on Holiday in his personal jet, this couple are now on the route of charging loads of money for their personal appearances at events, tv etc. Hundreds of years ago kings ruled the Country and lead their armies out in many battles. Apart from wise kings like Alfred the great, many abused their power and the common people they were supposed to represent which in the end lead to the Civil war of the mid 17th Century which lead to Charles the first being beheaded. Although Charles the second was invited back after Cromwell died, his powers were cut back in comparison to those of his father Charles the first, so much so that by the end of the 18th century the Monarchies power had all but vanished. The younger Royals are now starting to act out their lives in the media like actors in a celebrity reality show !Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 8:46 am It will never happen. Re: Lisa Nandy would vote to abolish the monarchy
I have been a republican since forever, but one sobering point is, who would replace them?
It would mean a President, and you can bet your house that after he lost office, Tony Blair would have run for President
Something to think about1

Well if it ever did happen, then restrict the period of time a President could serve, perhaps one term only of 5 years in total.ComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 9:53 am I have been a republican since forever, but one sobering point is, who would replace them?

I’m really not bothered enough one way or the other about Constitutional Monarchy or Presidential Republic. Though I do think Liz has done a decent job.

I think calling it a job is a little ott. Blimey, what I'd give to have a 'job' like that.

I wouldnt vote for the head of an elitist unelected figure head which legitimises the inequality of the British class system to be removed. I would prefer to do it in the middle of a violent revolution.
