I was also beginning to think that this might be a decent signing, but it seems our Scottish correspondent has put the kibosh on those thoughts, somewhat.

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
After Motherwell he went to Dundee in July 2019 and hasn't hit it off there. Most of his goals are at NL or below.Chief crazy horse wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 2:30 pm I was also beginning to think that this might be a decent signing, but it seems our Scottish correspondent has put the kibosh on those thoughts, somewhat.
He's had various opportunities at Middlesboro, Cardiff, Hartlepools, Stevenage, Tranmere, Motherwell etc to break into League football and hasn't done so.

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
Did you take off all the goals he scored as a substitute, or are you massaging the “goals in starts” figures a tad? He’s a good enough Conference player. Perhaps he’ll do a job if we end up back there.Top of the West. wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 2:00 pm55 Goals in his last 101 League starts at Gateshead, 44 in 78 Motherwell 6 in 12 and Dunde 5 in 11 been on the bench almost 50 times too.Kitch’s Magic Toes wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 1:17 pm He is fantastically average. Johnson’s appearances for Dundee and Motherwell average him a goal every 3 games
Last time i looked neither of those teams play in the National League
And what do subs appearances have to do with scoring goals ?

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
I clearly stated the sub appearances, even if you take those into account he's better than a goal every three games which is very decent. You only have to go back to the Gateshead cup games in 2018 to realise your odd tap in comment is really rather silly, good runs into the box and tidy finishes.Kitch’s Magic Toes wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 5:20 pmDid you take off all the goals he scored as a substitute, or are you massaging the “goals in starts” figures a tad? Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
Bonne’s all-round game far eclipses Johnson’s. He’s a tap-in merchant. Not a problem if he’s as good at it as Carl Griffiths. We’ll see.Lucky7 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 5:39 pmI remember this player we signed a few years he was called Macauley Bonne had scored 8 goals in 78 appearancesKitch’s Magic Toes wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 5:20 pmDid you take off all the goals he scored as a substitute, or are you massaging the “goals in starts” figures a tad? He was 21 when he last played in the Football League, seems to have matured a lot since then. Hilarious that you use his time as a kid against him as well.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 3:23 pmAfter Motherwell he went to Dundee in July 2019 and hasn't hit it off there. As Angol and Wilkinson are clearly on first-choice wages, this is probably a good a signing as we could have hoped for. Strong record at a lower level and coming into his prime, clearly the club thinks that’s worth a gamble. We were never gonna break the bank and sign someone with an exceptional scoring record at this level.

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
Johnsons scored something like 16 goals in 2 seasons in Scotland - Worth a punt for sure, especially with his record at Gateshead and he's 26.
People like Chief Crazy Horse need to understand that in January you aren't going to get the top quality signings unless you pay money or are doing well in your league.

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
Virtually all of his goals have come at the level below this one. Some players can make the step up to league football, and some decidedly can’t. I’m of the opinion that he can’t. IMHO he’ll look like Dan Holman did in our first year down the rabbit hole.Top of the JES wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 5:46 pmI clearly stated the sub appearances, even if you take those into account he's better than a goal every three games which is very decent. COYOS: why haven't we signed a striker? Ling is clueless!
Also COYOS: why are we signing a striker? It'll mean our inexperienced youngster plays a bit less! FFS Ling!

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
He never made it in the Football League despite many opportunities is my point. If that is using his youth against him then fine but you're telling me he was 21 so hardly a youth.Millennial Snowflake wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 6:33 pmHe was 21 when he last played in the Football League, seems to have matured a lot since then. He didn't make it in Scotland and Championship Dundee are delighted to let him go 5 months into the season.
Anyway he's here now so good luck to him. But why he got an 18 month contract is beyond my comprehension.

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
He wasn't ready for League football when he was 17/18 (at Boro/Hartlepool), that's hardly an indicator of his current level is what I'm saying. He was 21 when he last played in League 2 (Stevenage/Tranmere) - 21 is still very young for most footballers. I think he'll have developed a lot since then, so again I wouldn't take 2 short loan spells 5 years ago as strong evidence that he won't make it with us.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 6:38 pmHe never made it in the Football League despite many opportunities is my point. Welcome Danny - let’s give the lad a chance - natural goalscorers can just score so let’s hope L2 not a step too far - we really are a miserable bunch - more pedigree than Alabi and Harold for scoring goals !

Re: Danny Johnson Incoming?
Yes , welcome to Orient Danny . I hope we get to see him play a part in tomorrow's night game. I have to say I'm happy with our transfer business so far during this window . I just think we could do with another LB to challenge Widdowson if we're not going to play Sweeney at the moment . Brophy can then go back to LW. Surely we've got to put square pegs in to square holes to get the best out of the squad .
