Ratings thread
Vital result, much better work rate and two moments of quality from Sotiriou changed this game. Trying not to get too carried away with these ratings though...
Sargeant - 6 - no real saves of note to make nor any chance with the goal
Marsh - 6 - best RB we have, not so great going forward but overall steady
Happe - 7 - solid, did well
Ekpiteta - 8 - as per Happe but with a goal
Brophy - 8 - defended well and a threat with his passing and attacking play, only just edged out for MOTM
Clay - 7 - noticed him getting involved going forward first half, not so much second
Wright - 7 - no doubt inspired by the day did well, assist for the second goal
Cissé - 8 - big presence physically and nice passer of the ball
JMD - 6 - a tad harsh but faded second half after a good first 45
Wilkinson - 7 - skillful player, still seems wasted on the right but had a good game kept running right until the end
Sotiriou - 8 - MOTM, changed the game with his pace and trickery to work the cross leading to the corner for the goal plus a ruthless finish for the second
Angol - 7 - better coming on from the bench, had a hand in buildup to the second and got the ball away from danger at the end
Harrold - 6 - battled for headers at the end
Kyrpianou - 6 - on to run down the minutes
Got to take this level of battling and commitment through to the Stevenage game.

Re: Ratings thread
Don’t agree with the sarge ratings. He absolutely could have done something about the goal. It was 1mtr out on his back post. He didn’t move. And his kicking is awful. The reason he was dropped in the NL is because he was not good enough. The same applies a league higher

Re: Ratings thread
Generally agree with those ratings, but have Sarge as a 5 due to his part in their goal & for generally holding on ti the ball for too long & thus disrupting the rhythm of the team.
Brophy MOTM for me, by a short head from Sotiriou.

Re: Ratings thread
Very little to disagree with on your ratings. Sargeant was not at fault with the goal imho. Personally I thought Brophy edged the MOTM spot.

Re: Ratings thread
Brophy MOTM for me. Wicked corner for the first goal, always looking to attack but defended well today. Not a great performance by any means but better than of late. Thought Sarge could have done better for the goal-his teammates seemed to think so too. Was Sotiriou’s shot going in? I thought it took a big deflection?

Re: Ratings thread
Agree with the ratings thought Cisse was immense love how vocal he is. Sotiriou didn't stop and deserved the goal. Sarge not at fault for the goal, Harrold /Angol both lost there men making it to easy for the Newport player to get his head on it.
Great overall team performance and something to build on for Tuesday.

We have been looking for a player like him since the departure of Adams, if he does come consistently good, then hope we can make him a permanent signing.

Re: Ratings thread
From my view in the East Stand I thought Sargeant was at fault for the goal - he stood still for a cross he should have come for. He got away with one early in the second half when Matt luckily put the header wide. He does not command his area - time to give the new keeper a game.

Re: Ratings thread
First game I’ve seen Sotiriou start and have to say I was very impressed. He offers so much energy and an option to get in behind that we have lacked this season.
Then he showed the necessary quality in the final 20 mins which was enough for us to win, he really deserved the goal he got. MOTM for me.
Also credit to Ross for his first substation. I thought it was the wrong idea to have Sotiriou on the left but I was gladly proved wrong.

A quick look at the Gills main forum suggests Evans doesn't rate Cissé for whatever reason. If he can carry on playing like he did today let's hope we can get an option to sign him.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:33 pmWe have been looking for a player like him since the departure of Adams, if he does come consistently good, then hope we can make him a permanent signing.

Ruel is a ''fox in the box'' goalscorer, something we really lack.RicketyCricket wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:38 pm First game I’ve seen Sotiriou start and have to say I was very impressed. He offers so much energy and an option to get in behind that we have lacked this season.

Re: Ratings thread
Don't think Clay was worthy of same score as Sotoriou, who for me was clearly MOTM. Some poor passing from Clay makes him a 5.

Re: Ratings thread
Did anyone else see Brill talking to Sarge at the end saying or at least gesturing about his movement to the left for the goal?

Re: Ratings thread
I didn't see that but Sarge HAS to do better for the goal.
The ball was in the air so long and the actual header had barely any pace on it as well.
He was in no man's land from a corner early in the 2nd half as well when Newport should have scored.
I also think his communication with the defence is poor also, with Brophy almost forced into an error today when Sargeant should have been collecting the ball.
New keeper should start on Tuesday IMO.

Re: Ratings thread
Yup, he seems to have a natural instinct and eye for goal that others don't seem to show. When the cross was about to come in I was thinking "go back stick Ruel you can get this" - his movement and timing was impeccableSid Bishop wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:43 pmRuel is a ''fox in the box'' goalscorer, something we really lack.RicketyCricket wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:38 pm First game I’ve seen Sotiriou start and have to say I was very impressed. Re: Ratings thread
The goal was 100% down to Sarge. I sit in the South Stand right behind the goal and the guy headed it in from about two yards out. It was a floated cross too so Sarge could just have stepped back a few paces and caught it or, at the very least, palmed it behind.

Re: Ratings thread
I sit behind it in the north so was a whole lot closer to it than HM. Yes he should have saved it no doubt about it, it was soft. However, where were the defenders picking up their 2 players? Either could have scored and they both had ample time to leave it to each other and still score, poor defending in my opinion. No one within 5 yards of them.

But it was great to watch Sotiriou today.A top afternoons work rewarded with a more than deserved goal...

I was initially disappointed with the team selection - the new keeper should be in by now, Brophy and Marsh are being played out of position, Wright and Clay are still being picked despite some disastrous performances, Angol being left out again - but it was a much improved performance all round.
A two goal margin would have flattered us but we deserved the win. Admittdly, Newport offered absolutely nothing but let’s not focus on that.
I can’t be arsed to do individual ratings but special mentions to Ruel and Cisse for two excellent performances. They have made a massive difference to our starting team.

Absolutely . It's amazing what difference he's made to our central Midfield .
