Just to add I think Angol is ineffective as a lone striker . He needs another striker alongside him.

Dangerous game running inside across the field like that though. That's the problem putting a winger at LB, their first natural thought is always going to be attack minded.
I agree and that’s why I’m surprised that Ross didn’t mention bringing in another LB

Angol is a good touch player; Wilkinson far too distant from him. Did they ever manage a pass between them today? We do not have much of a goal threat from midfield at the moment; that's putting it lightly.

People criticising Angol? Hilarious.

He’s doing the work of two men up top because we have to pack the midfield.

This 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 if you want to try and dress it up just isn’t working, though. We need to get 2 up top, and get Angol and Wilko alongside each other.

He hasn't scored in open play in 12 games, if that is acceptable to you, then god whats know what else is, regardless if isolated or not, he has had a few good chances recently and took none, he is all hot air and no end product, don't get the clamour for him at all.

Soritoru in about 2 and half games has 2 goals, I think one less than Angol has from open play in 18-20 games, that says it all

Exactly, a few good chances. In a dozen games

It’s the system that’s the issue here. And that’s b cause we can’t play 2 up top, else our midfield gets over run.

Angol is a class player at this level, as is Wilkinson. Just need to get them together.

If he is a class player why hasn't he taken any of these chances and somehow a kid with 2 games has managed to take his, it doesn't correlate

He just looks a class player with his touches but he is totally ineffective and unproductive, what really counts not the little nice little touches and flicks but the real core of goals and assists

It wasn't a slip. He was tackled because he ran out of options after coming inside and being unable to use hos right foot.

On the one occasion Wilkinson was fit enough to play for Fletcher he brought him on as a RW. Just saying.

Agreed however, I'm not sure they would work together alongside each other, I'd play Angol just off wilko so he is facing goal rather than having his back to it all the time.

To another point made how far did Brophy run? How many players showed for the ball? How many wanted it? Not one player, hector had been hooked as had marsh so we had clay and mr invisible and neither of the forwards showing. Poor.

Thay doesn't mean you run across the middle of the pitch into their player. Take the simple option and play the ball back. This is why it makes me angry when people criticise players for playing backward passes- I'd rather they did that than do what Brophy did today.

The way he was going he should have lifted the ball over their left backs head and force him to turn as he never had any options.

Exactly this.

Hector would have had that ball off Brophy if he had still been playing. It’s as simple as that.

Plenty of 1v1 challenges he didn't win not make much effort to battle for. He's not that kind of player so not really surprising he's ineffective being deployed as a target man. Get a big lump in to play alongside him you'll see better output I reckon.

As you say does rely on getting a quality CM in to be able to play 2 upfront.

Their link up play when they do get near each other is exceptional.

You wouldn’t need either to act as the out and out target man. They can both do a bit of that but have so much more to offer. It’s criminal not to play the pair of them together now they’re both fit.

We just need one more half decent CM to partner Hector, then we can get back to 4-4-2.

No effort? No disrespect but that’s absolute bollocks. He was up against 2 lumps all game alone, unaided, and didn’t stop battling. 3 lumps if you include the silly sausage that tried to do him but injured himself in the process and had to go off.

Agree with this although Wilkinson doesn't like the rough stuff either. Really need a strong target man to come in and pick one of Angol / Wilkinson to play alongside them with the other to be fresh legs from the bench.

That however relies on playing 4-4-2 with a strong ball-winning CM coming in. Big week of signings required. Hopefully Gorman going and with any luck Alabi following will free up some budget. Also have a suspicion Ekpiteta might be one of those departures as well.
Ekpiteta departure will depend on Turleys injury. Alabi must go .Ross in his interview was hoping some deals could be done in the forthcoming week and will include a full back ,central midfielder to replace Gorman and a striker. Might as well let Dayton go as well.

Looked more like half hearted jumps for headers knowing he wasn't going to get anywhere near them. Perhaps that's classed as effort but you knew the ball was coming back to Grimsby every time it went high. If Harrold goes for the same ball he wins a lot more of them as that's his game.

Get ball on the floor to Angol (and Wilkinson to that matter) and it's a different story. Holds it up well, swivels and uses tricky feet to get out of tight spots and can get a shift on too. Just want to see him utilised in a way that plays to his strengths, rather than shoehorned into a role that doesn't suit.

Agree. Why can't Embleton see that he doesn't look like scoring playing up front on his own. Angol has a lot of skills but it's not being utilised in the right way. At the moment anyway, I would describe him as a 'pretty player' with the ball at his feet, but with little effect and no end product.
