The Clash's 40 greatest songs – ranked!

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/ ... _clipboard

Hard to argue with this list.
Had the pleasure of seeing them 4 times plus also the magnificent Big Audio Dynamite.
Still not sure if they are better than The Jam though.

The original drummer Terry Chimes and mentioned in number 35 Janie jones, owns the Back Pain Centre just around the corner from me. He treated my back nearly two years ago and we had a good old chat about The Clash and Joe Strummer, he later played in Black Sabbath. Decent bloke and very down to earth.

I can very easily argue with this list and I will.

First off, let me say I was lucky enough to see The Clash once and, for sheer raw power and energy, they are easily amongst the best half dozen live acts I've seen (and I've seen a LOT)

All such lists are subjective and, for me, the attack and drive of their early stuff is what made them stand out. My own list, therefore, would give much higher positions to, in particular, White Riot, I'm So Bored... and Janie Jones

Better than The Jam? Who can say. I probably listen to The Jam more often though.

Never saw them live and was working my way down the list looking for one of my all time favourites by any artist, Complete Control, which is No3. Can't argue with that.

Only saw them once (also once for the Jam).

This is a personal list of course, but it's totally wrong :8

And they were definitely better than the Jam

I liked both a lot. I never saw it as some sort of concocted competition.

They were different. One lot robbed reggae, rap and rockabilly. The other lot robbed sixties R&B and The Beatles for their material.

Being an old b*stard I can't say I like either The Clash or the Jam , I'm more into the old stuff like The Beatles , Hollies and Kinks 🤔🤔 .

Long time Boarders will recall I met Vince Whites dad whilst fishing off the pier at Taynuilt one day.

He was almost blind so I had to sort his tackle for him. When he cast in he forgot to put the bail arm off and snapped his line. So I had to tackle up again.

He said one day Vince left Southampton to go to London and the next time he saw him he had sticky up pink hair.

Sorting out a mans tackle is a proper job for real men only. Do you eat Toblerone?

The Clash could be patchy at times, but when they were good they were very good, & I really like a lot of what’s on bloated triple lp (!) Sandinista. The reworked Career Opportunities with kids singing, and “Lose This Skin” are favourites.

I bought my brother Sandanista when it came out (1980) and I don't think he ever listened to it. I've never listened to it either,
