Romford Wizards

Post by Lucky7 »

I see the Manager/Owner Glenn Tamplin has changed the name of Romford FC
He has brought in a staggering 35 new players in the last 5 games

Which read as follows

W1 D1 L3

Is this another club heโ€™s going to f*** up๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Another?

He left billericay playing 2 leagues higher than they were with a redeveloped ground, crowds of circa 4-5 times what they had and no debts.

Not sure that is f*cking things up

PS He is still a coke taking lunatic

Lost a load of players as expected due to the money, they've barely won a game in the last month or so.

Not his fault - he isn't there now.

I honestly didnโ€™t know. I gather from the responses not very well.

I meant financially rather than the playing side, to be fair.

It's interesting to read many of the comments regarding Glenn Tamplin's operations. As you may know, Romford FC ground share at Brentwood Town FC which is only a couple of hundred yards from where I live so I've been following the situation with interest.

Now there is no disputing the chaotic unorthodox methods Glenn Tamplin uses and the volatility of his character however in the cases of both Billericay Town and Romford there is a significant upside. As quite correctly stated in this thread, he left Billericay with no debts, an excellent ground for the level they are in, an extended and revamped clubhouse plus the club are playing and competing in a higher division. The new owners are now working hard on making the club sustainable, previously, Glenn Tamplin had merely been pumping money into the club from his own pocket to cover the significant losses and I am led to believe no debts were run up in the club's name at any time. Allegedly, the final straw was when the supporters hurled abuse at his son Archie who was playing in the team.

For his next 'hobby', he bought Romford FC, a club with no ground since the closure of their ground at Collier Row, they have since been ground sharing at various local grounds. Their previous owner just about managed to keep the club going on next to no income, (they were getting home crowds of about 20) and were bottom of Isthmian North League 1 with no sustainable future. Although they had obtained planning permission some time ago for a new ground in Romford not far from West Ham's Chadwell Heath training ground, the club could not afford to build it.

In it's previous life, Romford played at a well appointed ground at Brooklands, Romford and in the late 60's they were within a few votes of getting into the football league, regretfully they folded in the late seventies due to debts ran up but even now there is still much interest in the Romford name. At the first Romford home game under Tamplin, they attracted over 500 people to the match, albeit with the carrot of free entry and a free pint at the bar!!! He has signed countless players from a higher level of football including ex O Freddie Moncur and has undertaken to now build the new ground as soon as possible.

So from a club with no future, there is now hope and indeed, much excitement that the club might flourish again under Glenn Tamplin's unpredictable guidance which is a far better position they were in a few months ago.

As the former owner of Chelmsford City FC once said to me (he kept them going after they got thrown out of New Writtle Street), every club has it's natural level. You can push clubs higher artificially by paying players unsustainable wages but once the money dries up, things will go back (or plummet) to their previous level (eg Canvey Island and Hornchurch). Not withstanding the high wages, it will be really interesting with Romford's, potential, history and the catchment area they will be moving into to see the level at which the revamped Romford FC will find itself in a few years if Tamplin sustains his interest and keeps to his plan?

Interesting post from brentwoodo. I was a regular at Brooklands in the 1960s and well remember them winning the Southern League Premier Division. They used to get very decent crowds too back in those days. I'm a Romford boy and I've always had a soft spot for them despite all their problems of the last few years. Hope that Tamplin can get them moving forwards and up the football pyramid again.
