Council Hypocrites
So I'm reading in Auto Express the 320 council's responded to their freedom of information requests concerning fleet make up. Here are the facts.
66,617 vehicles across all councils across all 4 countries
61,045 or 91.6% are diesel powered
3,228 or 4.8% are petrol powered
1,835 or 2.7% are electric
Yet some of these councils charge you for driving certain vehicles in their zones or as I like to think fines or more likely taxes. Hypocrites the lot of them.
Take Glasgow, sorry max, they have plans to incorporate a LEZ yet 98.2% of their vehicles are diesel and half of those would not hit the required standard of engine to be exempted.
London has 4,844 vehicles of which 89% are diesel with 739 of them pre euro 6 standards. I bet they dont fine themselves!
It really is shocking to hear us be preached to, fined and taxed to drive on our already paid for roads yet they are not complient themselves. Its a scandal.

Calm down. This change over to clean fuels is going to take time.Thor wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 6:53 pm So I'm reading in Auto Express the 320 council's responded to their freedom of information requests concerning fleet make up. Here are the facts.

Re: Council Hypocrites
You bet it is looking at those numbers!
Although sying that, they did point out that of all the councils with more than 20 vehicles in their fleet, North Somerset must be commended for having 36% of its 95 vehicles fleet being pure electric, take a bow NS.

I’m sure you’ve told everyone more than once you have 4 high performance motors so is it all right for you and not the councils

Re: Council Hypocrites
I found it odd when the Major of London wrote to me to say that my van, only three years old mind, was not going to be allowed to pollute the centre of the city unless I paid him considerable sums of money. In a couple of years I will not be allowed inside the M25, something that will cause problems for many small clubs, charities and other groups. If pollution is that much of a problem just ban vehicles and be done with it. If businesses suffer tough. I get off the train at St Pancreas and see a queue of fifty taxis waiting for trade all with their engines running , you can chew the fumes. As for delivery vans their companies just pass the cost on to us the consumers and just continue to blast out smoke every time they pull away.
Its just another windfall tax riding on abysmal government advice in the past, tell drivers what to do then tax them for it.

Your car tax pays for up keep of roads, allegedly, however government uses some of the money raised to fund other things

Re: Council Hypocrites
Around 70% plus of the cost of a litre of petrol/diesel to be used in road vehicles goes to the government, that includes the fuel tax and the added 20% VAT. Total tax income for sales of Petrol and diesel across the Uk must be a huge amount of money, far beyond that which is spent on roads. Add that to road tax and car insurance tax and you have a huge earner for the UK government Treasury coffers.point nine one eight wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2019 7:08 pmYour car tax pays for up keep of roads, allegedly, however government uses some of the money raised to fund other things

Re: Council Hypocrites
Well that went over you head then. Councils are fining us for having a polluting vehicle by way of tax to enter zones yet they break it themselves.
It's another don't do as I do, do as I say.
Only sheep can't see it.
Re: Council Hypocrites
They are trialing all electric dust carts in London already, bio fuel and gas has been around for donkeys years but its all about cost. The councils are skint so they take the cheapest option to run a fleet of vehicles which is diesel. Hypocrites! , just a bit.

Re: Council Hypocrites
Unless taxed people will continue to pollute. I'm sure councils will change their own fleets once it is economical to do so. Good on them for making a rule even though it will put them out of pocket.

"They are trialing all electric dust carts in London already"
Some bright spark in Brighton and Hove Council bought an ex milk float and tricked it out as a recycling vehicle. So it trundles round the city centre all day looking 'green' and people say to themselves "thats a good idea", but and its a big BUT, the problem is that it has to go to the recycling centre at Newhaven to unload which means a 10 mph journey along the coast road at 4.00 in the afternoon which causes huge traffic problems and wrecks the bus timetables for hours.
