Negative Line Up

Post by Cheshunto »

I couldn’t understand why we started with such a negative line up today ??
Ok so Wilkinson was injured, fair enough, but we had three left footed wingers on the pitch, Brophy, Dayts and JMD, but with just Angol up front on his own.
We never really looked like scoring in the 1st half and it was just a matter of time before Colchester scored.
I don’t like to criticising Ross but we looked far more threatening when Harrold came on, but why not start with him and actually try to score that all important first goal .
As has been said elsewhere we looked 2nd best and pedestrian compared to Colchester who seemed quicker and sharper today.
Our home form really is poor, fortress Brisbane Road it certainly ain’t :(( :((

To me it shows a lack of confidence in our midfield and a lack of confidence in our options up front.

Hopefully behind the scenes he has been making this point and we'll be addressing the situation in January.

As I’ve said before I can never understand why we either start with just one forward or play with just one forward at home.

Problem is whichever CM pairing you go for its ineffective so we're stuck for options.

Straight 4-3-3 with Gorman or Kyprianou in there in place of Dayton may have worked better but still leaves Angol isolated. Target man he ain't that's for sure.

I'd be trying JMD with Angol for now to see how that goes for a game or two. Just dont see the point in playing Angol by himself and letting the opposition nullify him by swarming him.

I imagine Angol (and Wilkinson to some extent) must be thinking "this isn't what I signed up for" scrapping for hopeless long balls on their own vs the style of football we played last season.

All comes back to the CM though, if you control the middle of the park you can drive at the opposing defence and slip through balls in for the strikers to attack on the front foot. Right now we try and bypass Clay and Wright as much as possible so it's either high and long or overlap out wide with no-one in the box at the end of it.

Playing just one up front hands an advantage to our opponents.

If they can contain the one forward then most out=r goal threat is negated

In 12 home games so far , we have won 2, drawn 4 and lost 6, and also lost to Tiptree too in the cup.

We have scored just 15 goals in the 12 league games.

Time for a rethink!

^ the opposite view is that I think it was proved (source: The Numbers game) that keeping a clean sheet is on average worth more points than scoring one goal in a game.

But we're not really giving ourself much chance of winning home games with one up top

In the right place though and will give him confidence if he starts and would be a postive move instead of all this we must play only
one striker negative stuff.
