This started a month or two ago and now it has evolved into targeting football fans. I received a phone call from an Indian chap telling me that Amazon had mistakenly debited my account for £39 for Amazon Prime and they wanted to refund it. A quick look at my Amazon and bank accounts showed that this did not happen. He then made the mistake of asking me for my email address so I put the phone down and never heard another thing.

I have had this call also on landline. Just hang up people.

Don't hang up, just put the phone set down without hanging up and carry on what you were doing. It keeps their line open so they can't phone others and costs them money. Or if you have a whistle, whistle it hard down the line, it can "fry" the phone electrics at their end and it gives them a shock and ringing in their ears for a while. They are crooks, they deserve no better.

I used to work for BT International. The Indians get very impatient hanging and worry about it costing them. I always tell them I have to go down 5 floors please hang on. Leave the line open & do something else.

Once they put the phone down the line goes dead, so it can’t be costing them nor are you blocking that line.

I can think of two things that could happen if you pressed 1. You could be connected to a person who sounds very official and tries to get your account information from you. The fraudsters would then have access to your bank details and clear your account out. The other thing is that pressing 1 could connect you to a premium rate number and you will be paying £6 per minute for the phone call.

The former. Yes. The latter to my knowledge can't happen.
