The Birkbeck Tavern
Does anyone still get down there pre-match?
I used to go there all the time both prematch and as a regular a long while ago and loved it. I gather it's been through loads of changes of ownership recently so might have changed.
Is the Chinese takeaway still open more or less opposite the gaff?
Cheers!

Used to go all the time, when it was the only decent pub in Leyton. It’s fallen well behind now in my view. Terrible beer selection compared to other options. The Star round the corner is a much better option.

Re: The Birkbeck Tavern
Used to me my regular pre-match too, but haven’t been in there for ages, just got too crowded, not always impressed with the bar staff either.
Football mate and I decided we’d vary our pre-match pubs, so normally do a couple anywhere from The Bakers Arms area to Leytonstone to Stratford, quite nice having some variety and a pre-match stroll too.

Terrible pub. It's full of away fans on match days now so avoid at all costs.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 10:50 am I went to the Leyton Technical last time I was down. What the fuk is that about.
The Coach and Horses is good on a match day, but quickly fills up with the new 'locals' on a Saturday evening which is an issue.

....
Would rather go to a pub & mix with away fans.
This idea that you have to be segregated everywhere is one of worst aspects about professional football.
Let's meet people chat with them & share our common love of the fame is my view

Not when all they're interested in doing is bellowing their songs out. I'd like to see you try and have a conversation with the Swindon fans that colonised the place back in September.spen666 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 11:00 amRed_Army wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 10:52 amTerrible pub. Quite easily done...
Not sure why you are so intimidated or upset by fans singing.
I've sat in bar chatting with Sunderland fans when they are playing Newcastle. I haven't a problem.

I'm pleased for you. I'd rather not be stuck in a crowd with some pissed up morons. I much prefer being able to hear myself think around people I'm not worried are about to smash the gaff up.spen666 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 11:06 am

How many times have pubs been smashed up in Leyton by visiting fans
Strange how you are happy to go to football ground where the "pissed up morons" are singing etc.
There is something rather sad in wanting segregation

Re: The Birkbeck Tavern
I never said I want segregation, I just choose to hang around with my mates in a place where I feel happy and comfortable. I have no interest in speaking to strangers from opposing teams, but I'm not asking to be walled off from them.spen666 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 11:50 amThat is your fear rather than reality.Red_Army wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 11:14 amI'm pleased for you. It's been a while since I was last in there, but do they still have RedO's credit card behind the bar?

Enjoy the Birkbeck: many of the other less-traditional watering-holes have now got a bit pretentious..and expensive.

No, you take your segregation even further than a single wall or fence by going to a different pub to where they are.Red_Army wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 11:52 amI never said I want segregation, I just choose to hang around with my mates in a place where I feel happy and comfortable. How exactly is that asking for segregation you tedious troll.
For somebody constantly bleating on about free speech and resistance to differing opinions you sure seem intolerant of where others decide to spend their free time.
Hypocrite.

Fair enough, you got me. I just love giving it to away fans and the thought of having to actually talk to them and end up liking them saddens me.spen666 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 12:59 pmNo, you take your segregation even further than a single wall or fence by going to a different pub to where they are.

Sigh, as an occasional overseas visitor I love the Birkbeck but I’m always up for any other good suggestions (after Hamilton Hall and the Pride) but this post appears to have degenerated into personals again

I remember going in the Birkbeck back when it was a Charringtons pub.
