The thing is, you have no idea who is taking you, no idea if the car is legal, no idea if they have all the correct documents and no idea if your safety is at risk.

Is that any different to any other taxi or private hire service

Black taxis, yes, they have the plates on the back of the motor, the badge numbers in the front and rear windows, they must wear their badge at all times which corresponds to the plate in the side window.

The fact is the black cabs are held up to a higher standard than the Uber and mini cabs. That’s a fact. They have two tests a year, they have the plating as well which is really strict, you will fail for example if it has more than 6 stone chips on the bonnet, a thing that does not affect its ability to drive, but highlights the standards they have to go through.

Even though around a dozen or so of my mates are black cabbies, I personally think as Road users they think they own the road. But I do know that you are safer in a black cab, a person who knows where they are going, supported by a taxi which passes all safety standards to a high degree.

A mini cab, Uber etc the cars are not tested to the same standards which is unfair.

I agree that the standards are higher for a black cab than they are a mini cab/private hire.

At the moment mini cabs have a yearly Public carriage office test (which isn’t too in depth), and if the vehicle is over a year old it’s subject to 2 MOT tests a year.

I work for Addison Lee and I can say that the standards and emphasis on passenger safety are much higher than that of Uber.

All cars are insured by Addison Lee themselves on a group insurance.
All drivers have to pass a knowledge test before being offered a job.
I have to produce my driving license every year and give permission for AL to check the detail with DVLA.
AL trains drivers, to an NVQ level, in private hire regulations, passenger safety, driving standards, dealing with disabled passenger and even first aid, something that even black cab drivers don’t have to do.

Please don’t compare Uber with other PH firms.

You do realise that tfl set the fares for black cabs and not the drivers themselves!

I would be happy to see tfl set the fares for mini cabs as well. Just download a simple app to get the price. All private hire companies would have to charge this price, then passengers can pick whatever company that want and not because they are cheap.

This would also mean that companies like Uber would have to invest in training and improving its drivers to compete.

Of course, they will be aware of hot spots, road works etc. And the routes easier for them despite it being a long way round. But they are not alone.

Last time in Dubai, got a cab. He politely asked if I minded him dropping off something at another hotel enroute. No problem. What was a problem was him keeping his meter running whilst we detoured around all sorts of places to do the drop off before taking us to where we wanted. I politely pointed out this meter oversight. He Kindly adjusted the bill.

I didn’t come down with the last rainfall and I am nobody’s fool. I notice stuff like this.
