I've been a defender of Ling but the farce with Fletcher doesn't happen at well run clubs. Suspect we've got some deep issues that Ling won't address as to admit them would be to admit fault, hence why he seems to be prodding Ross to go for the managers job permanently.
What deep issues do we have that are Lings fault then?

The Championship didnt even exist then. How old are you?
Neither did the premier league nor the champions league but they all still keep the history of continuity. The fact it changed names means nothing.

Some of the questions were pretty hopeless. Some were like lectures. Ridiculous.

Absolute wibble. Any manager that does well with Orient will get poached by a club at a higher level. Orient have just sold Bonne and Koroma for peanuts, I'm not sure they're bothered.
Absolutely not wibble.

It's not about a manager doing well and possibly being poached if they do well. It's about someone not wanting to be here but doing so for a pay day, then clearing off the next time there's a sacking at a club they deem more suitable to their level.

It's totally different with players anyway - a manager is far more instrumental - but Bonne and Koroma both developed themselves whilst here to earn the chance at Championship clubs. They weren't already Championship players operating at a level they considered beneath them.
Do you really think there’s a list of people out there whose dream it is to manage Leyton Orient? Whatever the reason is, if the manager of this club does well, he’ll be targeted by L1 teams and he will go.

Is it more instrumental? The way it’s looking is they want the coaches to maintain the status quo and Martin Ling to control everything. The manager is a yes man under this regime. My point about those players was the cheap fees they went for because you guessed it, they didn’t want to be here long term and if a bigger team came in for them, they wanted guarantees they could go.

Orient have to operate in this constant buying and selling market.

There’s an interesting thread on twitter about the DoF role (not necessarily confined to whether Ling is the right person).

Our old mate Enormous Derek/Eddie Von Sphincter chips in with a view close to my own. Worth a read through.

To be fair Ling is the only man out there with a proven record of getting Orient promoted from league 2, what more can we want?

One staff member doing both roles? Plenty clubs get on fine without the DoF role. Bearing in mind you've got Macklin there as CEO too if there's the argument about needing someone at the club to oversee business side in the absence of the owners. We could do with Travis being around day-to-day for a while, that would settle things down pretty quickly with his leadership I reckon.

At the beginning Ling was crucial to getting the club back to normal again, no argument about that. Once it was stabilised though the role seems to be a nice-to-have rather than must-have and also appears to limit the field of candidates wanting to work within that structure.

I have to agree, initially a DOF was needed when the new owners took over.
However I do not believe that is still the case as has been said we have Danny Macklin as CEO.
The money Martin Ling is being paid would be much better spent where is obviously needed by bringing in a proven, experienced Manager at this Level with no interference.

Can you imagine the calibre of manager we could attract if we were offering the combined DOF and head coach packages?

Still wouldn't happen though would it? They would offer a competitive package, but much less than the combined thus bringing about savings to the wage bill.

We are going to struggle to get an experienced manager . Believe we cannot afford a League 1 manager. Rumour has it that CF was given a contract that either side could terminate within a 3month period. How true this was is anybody’s guess. Don’t know if many managers would agree to these terms if that was the case.

Agree with both of these comments. ML did a good job in a short time of getting in players so we could field a team. Now time to consider if the DOF role in its current form is needed anymore.

I am sure that although the fundamentals of the DoF role are broadly the same across the board, there will be considerable variations on the theme on a club by club basis. I would agree Sid, that the owners should consider looking at the way in the which the DoF role is structured at the O’s and/ or look at the person who is currently performing that role and then assess If the current set up remains fit for purpose.

Yes I realise he has 18 months or so to go on the new deal. I still think that .given recent events, a review would be in order.
