Echo chamber effect
Watching that Q&A back (hello Mr Travis and Mr Ling if you're reading lol) one thing struck me about the discussion about the coaching setup.
With all the focus on building staff and promoting from within is there not a risk of an echo chamber effect taking hold where the club only plays a certain way and takes certain actions because there's no external influence to challenge that?
It's often said you shouldn't spend the whole time in the company of people with your own views as it only reinforces your own opinions. No doubt we've all experienced that in our own work where sometimes a problem gets solved by someone coming in with a different approach.
Is there perhaps an opportunity to bring someone in to advise on a consultancy basis. Perhaps an older manager who's retired from the game. It seems at least some of what Fletcher said about the squad is correct but his methods were too brash for the "culture". Perhaps the same opinions but communicated to Travis / Teague in a different way may have yielded more positive results?

Re: Echo chamber effect
An excellent point from Gshaw. The belief that our way is the best way and only way removes the possibility that there are better ideas out there.

If you're top it shows you're doing something right and it doesn't need changing, just tickling along to keep the success coming.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2019 2:12 pmYou wouldn't be saying that if we were top of the league.
In the position we are right now doing the same thing over and over again isn't improving matters so you try something different.

From watching that Q&A Travis comes across really well, you can see why he's got to where he is. Ling perhaps more defensive and set in his ways, hence a fresh pair of eyes with no internal connection every now and again would be no bad thing.

Although it sounds like his methods were a bit too bull-in-a-china-shop I don't think he was too far off in his assessment of what needs to change in our playing style and fitness levels.ContrifibulatoryFred wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2019 6:54 am All of a sudden Fletcher the iconoclast is being re-cast by some as Fletcher the misunderstood visionary cast aside by fearful and narrow-minded oafs

A good parallel would be back in the Davis days when he (and Ling by extension) were obsessed with the idea of playing Grainger / Sargeant as our only first XI keepers. First thing JE did was change that up.
If the same issue was happening now it seems like there's a good chance it wouldn't change (see Clay in CM as a prime example)
