Electric cars may not be as green as they were thought to be !
Work needed to make these batteries more easily recyclable !
Britain faces 'waste battery mountain' as electric car use surges.
Britain faces a new waste crisis from a “ battery mountain” caused by the growing use of electric cars, according to an academic study.
Researchers have calculated that the one million electric cars sold in 2017 alone will produce 250,000 metric tons, or half a million cubic metres, of unprocessed battery pack waste when they reach the end of their lives in seven to ten years’ time, enough to fill 67 Olympic swimming pools.

I remember when Petrol cars were the curse of the environment destroying the ozone layer
I remember when diesel cars were the curse of the environment creating all sorts of nasties in the air we breath
Electric cars will get their turn. In fact they have never been clean, they just move much of the pollution elsewhere.
what they do is reduce the pollution we breath in our city areas and that’s no bad thing.

They is not a lot of logic to some of these things. People complain that things should go back into glass containers rather than the beastly plastics, the problem is producing the glass causes more pollution than the plasic does. Textile production cause more damage than all the air travel put together, we may be able to stop people flying but they will never give up clothes.

Spot on. The clothing industry is second only to the petrochemical industry for pollution yet I see no action being taken against the proliferation of cheap throw away clothing. I have little doubt all these climate change protesters are as guilty as the rest of us in this area.RedO wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2019 11:34 amBut you can stop people buying so many clothes.Mikero wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2019 11:47 pm They is not a lot of logic to some of these things. As an environmentalist I gave chats at Universities, Warwick and Exeter to be precise. A common question was why we have so many throw away coffee cups. So I went through the process of creating china cups , reusable, cups being washed in detergent, using hot water etc and all that entails by way of an example of how complex a topic this was. I don’t have the answers.
So I’m slow in criticism of others for their views/actions. The term environmental friendly is absolute bolox. The correct term is environmentally less damaging.
So I struggle withball this hype about electric cars. It just moves the problem away from inner cities and makes people feel they are doing their bit. Green wash.

Re: Electric cars may not be as green as they were thought to be !
Brighton bus company has just ordered 30 new electric double-deckers costing £9.6m. They are all electric but have a diesel generator and recovery braking to charge the batteries. The generators will only be used outside the city centre and, intrestingly, they have the wing mirrors replaced with wide angle cameras and HD screens in the cab, which may go some way to save injury to some of our maniac cyclists but I am afraid there is not much that can be done about the jay-walking tourists.

Most likely similar or same as bus that my girlfriend and I went on a few months ago when we came back late at night from Moorfields eye hospital in London. I rarely travel on Buses, let alone visit London, so I was puzzled to hear an engine at the start then changing over to Electric power, found out later that it was one of the type of Buses described below.Mikero wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2019 11:17 am Brighton bus company has just ordered 30 new electric double-deckers costing £9.6m. The New Routemaster, originally referred to as the New Bus for London and colloquially known as the Boris Bus, is a hybrid diesel-electric double-decker bus operated in London, England. Designed by Heatherwick Studio and manufactured by Wrightbus, it is notable for featuring a "hop-on hop-off" rear open platform similar to the original Routemaster bus design but updated to meet requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. The first entered service in February 2012. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Routemaster
