Just seen on Twitter that there is a vote between josh coulson and Mickey bullock as to who was the greatest header of a ball in orients history. This is even more laughable than the man Utd vote that Eric cantina was their greatest player rather than George best. Tommy Johnston was not only the greatest header of a football seen at the orient he is widely recognized as second only to tommy Lawton in the all time list.
I would invite anyone who never had the privilege of seeing tommy play to read biography ‘happy wanderer’, where one Scottish contributor recounted seeing the opposing goalkeeper taking a goal kick and tommy Johnston heading it straight back into the net from almost the halfway line. Not one of those lightweight ‘balloons’ they play with today but real old leather balls with protruding laces. No disrespect to josh coulson who is a decent in the air, but if he was to face tommy Johnston he wouldn’t win a single header.
