Looks Like It Is Now OK to Feed Ducks Bread?

Just watch that you don't get harangued by busybodys and don't overfeed as that can cause pollution problems. This is an interesting article.

It doesn't say it's 'ok'. It says it's ok in moderation, which of course people are incapable of.

Preposterous Joe why have you got such a low opinion of your fellows? Surely people who feed wild animals, are mainly/partially motivated, by some sense of wanting to do good. Therefore if they are told not to overfeed ( causing pollution ), they would comply. Also ducks often come onto land to be fed. This could be encouraged. It says in the article that some ducks are starving as they have come to expect this source of food. I find it telling that the main driver of this campaign was a manufacturer of wild animal feed.

At least it will fatten them up before they are killed by some in society, it does go on unfortunately.

Thank GOD I finally have some clarification on this issue as I’ve been worrying about this for years. Some people say I’m a boring b*stard for being concerned with such things, but I say I’m an eco friendly spirit panda with love to spare.

I’ve a garden pond and it was common for ducks to visit. They enjoyed a bit of bread. So did my koi. Not keen on them sh*tting in my koi pond but it was a nice sight, until,

On day I went into the garden and was confronted by mummy duck and 12 chicks. On advice I spent a fortune on Specialist duck food whilst at the same time discovered they had a taste for our garden plants. Bread off the menu. Advice on what to do, wait till they get bigger, catch them and transport them to the local pond. Ever tried catching a youthful duck. Eventually they sodded off.

Same next year. Then nothing, thank goodness. Food advice, no bread for young ducks. But nobody told mummy duck that, regular food probably why she chose our garden.

For our more adventurous fans, if travelling to the North-East. Please do not feed the Eider Ducks bread. They love the stuff, but apparently it mucks up their breeding and they make weak egg shells. Apparently cod in batter is ok, more like their natural food. So if you are out to stuff a duvet, bear that in mind.

And know what side it’s buttered.
