He is right about our stature in this League. The issue is that while what he is saying about needing to have realistic expectations is perfectly reasonable it contradicts the messaging and behaviour of those in charge of the club. We are being sold a dream of 30,000 seater Thunderdomes and Championship football by owners whose actions don’t align with their stated ambition. It doesn’t help that season ticket holders get slapped with increasingly shorter deadlines to renew each year all under guise of “you don’t want to miss out on next seasons bonanza”, then 3 games into the season the manager is saying on record not to get your hopes up too much.
Just on the topic of expectations I'm not sure which sections of fanbase Richie is referring to, maybe it's other socials but if you take the season prediction poll on here 50%+ went for mid-table or lower

Quite, gs. "Fans expect..." is never qualified by statistics, it's just a way of blaming someone else.

This is all on the owners. The investment isn’t there. They have poorly managed this squad for years. You can’t sell your best players in the same window as you need to replace 8 or 9 players because they’re out of contract. They want the fans to foot the bill and use their own money as little as possible.

As he said ‘give me another £5m and I’ll get you up there’, he’s not wrong.
You make some good points.

Still frustrated with the Ballard thing. It’s good money and it’s tough if the player wants to go. But unlike Galbraith who only had a year left, Ballard had a long contract and we could have said, we’ve got too much turnover, we need you to play 3 months. If you get your head down and score ten goals we’ll get better bids (and teams are more desperate in Jan) and you’ll get better wages. We could have brought in Kabia and eased him in to take over.

That said, I don’t want Orient to be frivolous but if you get 5m for a player why not spend £2m (less than half) on a real statement signing? Or a couple of £1m signings. Rather than reinvesting less than a 5th?
Don’t really have an issue with selling Ballard. If you’re a bottom half L1 club and a decent sized Championship club comes in for your top scorer there isn’t much you can do. It’s the natural way of things. We’ve basically done the same to Grimsby with Kabia.

The thing about spending (relatively) big at this level is that it’s not like you’re buying world class. Chucking 6 figures at a player for L1 is always a gamble and let’s be honest, when you’ve got the likes of Leicester, Sheff Wed and in recent seasons Cardiff + Birmingham in the division Orient are hardly a big name club at this level.

Look at the likes of Ballard, Galbraith and Kelman. None of those were marquee signings. They were excellent bits of scouting.

I’d honesty rather the club reinvest the money they get for selling players into new training facilities. It’s well known that what we currently have is sub-standard and it’s not outrageous to suggest that if may well be playing a role in our terrible injury record.

This is the problem I have with the ownership at the moment. There isn’t any clear direction or strategy beyond a generic “do well”. I’d much rather those in charge came out and said that over the next few years they are focusing on investing and building behind the scenes infrastructure at the club (e.g. training facilities, youth academy, scouting, medical, sports science staff) for long term success. I’d be much more forgiving of a few fallow seasons if this was clearly the case. At the moment the unreasonable season ticket deadlines, the constant pushing of super fan memberships and new merchandise to purchase, surveys about how much you’d pay for a ticket in a new 30,000 seater Thunderdome, feels a bit jarring when there’s no clear direction what the club wants to do with these revenue streams. In all honesty it feels like the club are treading water in survival mode financially (which is understandable) while trying to fob the fanbase off (who I can only presume they think are gullible mugs) with fantasies about progression.

Travis and Teague bought a conference club with the ambition to stabilise it in League 1 within a few years. They were successful. They don’t have the capital to go any further. Thats fine. But bringing in snake oil salesmen like this Gandler bloke isn’t the way forward in my opinion.

They must have had an agreement in his contract that they have to listen to bids from the Championship, in this market, we could have squeezed a bit more out of them. Only problem with selling late is any club we want to sign a replacement from knows there’s desperation.

The squad is put together so poorly

Is it though? It's early to judge individual players but if you look at the components at a high level overview

GK - senior pro signed

CB - replacements signed for Happe and Simpson
LB - two players Morris & Boniface
RB - two players Stevens & Gilchrist

CDM - experienced pro (and captain) signed, maybe one short here
CAM - signed Dobra, not sure if he actually is a CAM though

LW / RW - pretty well stocked already but added new ones

ST - Ballard replaced, ideally another senior pro would be here too

Imo it's short of another senior pro ST and better quality CM to replace Clare / Craig but in terms of squad building what needed to be brought in has arrived. Problem is shifting a few more unwanted players in order to bring the last pieces of the puzzle in.

Bigger problem is that the club still can't manage to keep players fit. A few games in and missing multiple through injury, playing one that's half fit (Dobra) and still having some high earners M.I.A. for months on end isn't sustainable

On the question of expectations I'd be happy to be comfortable in mid table . After being relegated to the National League a few years ago I appreciate the level we're currently playing at . I just don't want us to get relegated. However if lightening was to strike us and we won promotion to the Championship I would be one of the happiest people in the country .

Personally I think the board know that RW is on thin ice and are reluctant to give him all the money to spend. It’s been clear for a long time that if we start the season badly it will quickly unravel and RW will have to go.

That won’t be cheap as he’s on a long contract and then any decent new manager will want assurances of funds to spend in January on their own players.

So Richie needs to stop with the tantrums and realise he’s in the last chance saloon.

It's one of the reason why I love the bloke . Richie wears his heart on his sleeve and always tells you the truth , good , bad or ugly . He gives it to you straight without all the bullshit we've had from previous managers .

Yesterday, we lost to a better team. It happens. But, what shouldn't happen is that we shut up shop like a boxer on the ropes, stopped daring to press, and lost our self assurance and confidence. 'Broke my heart to see so many so called fans walking out just when the team needed a boost from the terraces.
Strange, really, when the day before many of us (including me) thought we'd assembled a squad that had potential.
What next, I wonder.

The trouble is that £5 million is probably paid in instalments over a period of perhaps 2-3 years. This is all wrong perhaps if teams had to pay the fee in one go or at least 70% then clubs at our level may be hesitate to agree. When players sign a contract they should abide by it unless he does not reach the expectations of the manager.

Re Blackpool:

It's true that they do have six footballers on the books who can play as a forward -
Ennis and Taylor are injury prone and indeed currently injured
Kouassi is likely off in this window and not up to it yet, sub at best
Charles who came in summer on loan from HTFC with an injury record, coming to Blackpool is his post-injury rehab.
Bloxham who is on form at the moment.
And Jerry - well we'll see how it goes.
If all were firing on all cylinders then certainly Ennis, Taylor and Bloxham are potent and Yates can be, but hasn't been of late.
Charles and Yates did score yesterday, the other goals came from a midfielder (Anderson) and a defender (Williams, on loan from Pompey).
They did play well but Posh's defence was effing woeful and Peacock-Farrell in the Blackpool goal made some blinding saves. Posh had the lion's share of possession and both teams had a lot of shots on and off target.

So as usual, there is context to all of these things.

Blackpool fans would laugh their heads off at Richie citing them as aspirational and well resourced.

True , on the day Barnsley were simply better than us and deserved the win . Our players are only human and for some reason Barnsley's first goal knocked some confidence out of them . We can and will play much better than that . Anyway that's in the past now so we've got to fully focus on Bromley Tuesday night . We've got to get a win to stay in touch with the top teams . Although we're currently 16th we're still only 4 points off top spot . It's only the end of August for goodness sake so still plenty of time to put things right and improve . If we're playing badly by Christmas then I will start to get concerned.

You have to wonder why we go to pot as soon as we concede a goal at home just like we did last season with a completely different set of players.

Do you not think that could be something to do with the manager?

The booing at half time took me by surprise. We were 1-0 down ffs. I understand why Richie was upset at that.

Although they are a younger side and looked miles ahead of us
But they're not booing just because we are 0-1 down...
Why were you booing then?

And what did you hope to achieve by booing?
What gives you that idea that i booed? As it so happens I never boo.

Jesus. Did you even watch the interview?

"When your most experienced players don't turn up..."

Called out Hayden, El Miz and Olowu by name.
He was basically digging out the fans for their reaction today, not the players.
"I think you always have to consider supporters; supporters aren't always wrong," said Everton manager Moyes.

Feels far too early to say we've recruited badly and the idea we've cheaped out doesn't stand up imo. Hayden, Dobra, Kabia, Stevens, Baxter and Oluwu seem a different category of experience and level than what we brought in last summer. This was all done whilst carrying the wages of Craig and Cahill, and almost definitely subsidising Bakinson and Koroma's wages to get them off the books because Wellens has decided he can't work with them.

We've been slow starters every year in league 1 and two of those seasons were successes, so it might be a case of needing to get up to speed again. But Wellens has had his previous excuses addressed - a lack of budget, a lack of experience, a lack of bedding in time, bad characters in the squad etc. I don't think he can blame anyone else should we not start improving fairly quickly. Last season was so awful that he's not got the credit left in the bank to ride out many more home performances like yesterday.

Hayden obviously experienced but

Dobra - 2 seasons at L2 level

Kabia - 1 season at L2 level

Stevens - 28 games in L1, 2 years ago

Baxter - 2 seasons at L1.

Oluwu - 1 season (ish) at L1 with Stockport, few years before that at L2.

Also Springett - no experience, Akhamrich - 9 games at L2, Boniface - no experience.

Of course, I’m not suggesting otherwise.

I’m just pointing out the squad we’ve assembled is still inexperienced at this level. With Forrester and Baxter already out yesterday, when Hayden went off we looked totally rudderless.

Hayden obviously experienced but

Dobra - 2 seasons at L2 level

Kabia - 1 season at L2 level

Stevens - 28 games in L1, 2 years ago

Baxter - 2 seasons at L1.

Oluwu - 1 season (ish) at L1 with Stockport, few years before that at L2.

Also Springett - no experience, Akhamrich - 9 games at L2, Boniface - no experience.
Stevens played 34 games in a League 1 promoted side. Oluwu a similar number in a side that made the play offs at this level last season, and played for Doncaster at this level before that. Baxter has played a seasons worth of football at championship level.

Signing top performing players from league 2 isn't signing green academy kids from the prem, albeit it'll take them longer to adapt than players familiar with this level.

It's definitely a different calibre of signing Vs last couple of summers.

If I was the owner I'd give Richie the budget to bring in those two extra players he wants but in the meantime try a move on Gordon and Craig and possibly Cahill who in my opinion has done nothing wrong. However that would be it . We need to start improving .

" For the 2026-27 season, the EFL has reduced the maximum percentage of turnover that League One clubs can spend on wages from 60% down to 50%."
