Why this fascination in collecting so many pairs of trainers !
Out of fashion me, I was surprised watching this BBC video about these three young women who call themselves ''Sneakerheads'' Their lives seem to revolve around their collections of so many trainers. Can anyone explain to me as to what is the point of owning ( as one women in this film says ) 300 pairs of trainers, some of which seem to be kept unused in the boxes they were first purchased in ? Reminds me a bit of a tv documentary I saw a few years ago about young women who got themselves into thousands of pounds of debt because of their addiction to buying new clothes, many of these clothes were repeat buys of the same items, kept on hangers, unused with all the original price tickets etc still on them. Is something rather lacking in their lives ?
'It's like trainers have been traditionally made for men'
Shanice, Jackie and Lauryn describe the challenge of finding hype trainers in their size.
The women, who describe themselves as "sneakerheads" and have hundreds of sports shoes, each say shops rarely have the right sizes for them compared to men's sizes. Adidas and Reebok have told the BBC some of their limited edition trainers start in smaller sizes and because the shoes are limited edition releases, "there can be limited availability across all sizes".

Re: Why do some, mainly young people, have this fascination about buying so many pairs of trainers ?
Don't really have a problem with it.
Isn't it similar to how some people would keep hundreds of bottles of wine without opening them?
Some of these people are in terrible debt as well, although this is the middle-class kind of mortgages and loans.
There is clearly an interest in the subject and also a part of speculation that their values might go up one day.
Keeping stuff in their original boxes unused is actually fairly smart. Sony Walkmans might have been fairly common 20 years ago and a good one cost £20.... Had you bought one and not opened I'd guess its value might be at least several times that today and probably will increase as time goes by.

In Karl Marx's critique of political economy, commodity fetishism is the perception of the social relationships involved in production not as relationships among people, but as economic relationships among the money and commodities exchanged in market trade. As such, commodity fetishism transforms the subjective, abstract aspects of economic value into objective, real things that people believe have intrinsic value.[

It's not just youngsters though. My old business partner who's now in his mid 50s has a walk in wardrobe full on box fresh trainers.(approximately 100 pairs)
All kinds of brands, designs & colours. I have about 5 pairs & my Mrs thinks that's excessive.

Yeah fair enough it was a copy and paste but to be realistic you have to understand the concepts and theory first to know where to look for it.O my gawd wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 11:15 pmMax B Gold wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 10:31 pm In Karl Marx's critique of political economy, commodity fetishism is the perception of the social relationships involved in production not as relationships among people, but as economic relationships among the money and commodities exchanged in market trade. Why do some, mainly old posters, insist on posting such long thread titles?

Is nobody else concerned about the creepiness of the OP's interest in little girls trainers?

Re: Why do some, mainly young people, have this fascination about buying so many pairs of trainers ?
A lot of the new trainers in a box in this country came about due to
Charlie Magri , he had a sports shop in Bethnell green , which ended up selling rare trainers
For an awful lot of money , shoes like
Nike's air tw's or Air SC 2's could go for a grand back in the ealry 2000s .
The shop charlie had was taken over & specialised in a lot of fila nike sergio & ellesse
clothing, as well as the trainers .
Certain trainers are so rare they are now worth 20 times more than they were at original retail price

Re: Why do some, mainly young people, have this fascination about buying so many pairs of trainers ?
Love that in the original post it's acknowledged that some people have an addiction but this is just trivialised and mocked by saying "is something rather lacking in their lives?" of these people rather than trying to understand what causes this addiction. It's the same cause as to why people become addicted to gambling or alcohol (which would attract more sympathy).
These "mainly young people" will get a dopamine hit from buying these items and the anticipation of buying them. As their brain cells and dopamine pathways become desensitised they need a bigger hit each time and so go on and on with their addiction. Eventually, the only the thing that releases this dopamine, and therefore happiness or motivation in the individual, is their addiction. So yeah, something rather is lacking in their lives in the dumbed down words of the original post but the lack of understanding of this is rather pathetic.

Re: Why do some, mainly young people, have this fascination about buying so many pairs of trainers ?
Good explanation ''Tuffers'', thanks for that information. Not a subject I have ever delved into before. Speaking for myself, I only have 4 pairs of ordinary shoes, one for best, one for normal everyday wear and two old pairs I use for gardening, working on cars, building decorating work etc. I was unaware until now that trainers can be some sort of an investment as well as their main use of everyday wear and sporting use. I have two old pairs of trainers, I use them for when I play table tennis, the odd game of cricket for the local community centre ( I have to have a runner when I bat ! ) and not much else unfortunately, my two bad knees stop me from doing most sports including the game I loved, trained for and played from the age of 7 years old, my beloved football !! I suppose as well that some people, like these three young women, just love to look at trainers, hold them, put them on then put them back in theiir boxes etc. Somewhat similar to other collectors of many various things including clothes, model cars, planes, paintings and porcelain figures etc.tuffers#1 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 11:40 pm A lot of the new trainers in a box in this country came about due to

Unbelievably it was called Charlie Magri Sports. I just can't remember it at all other than going there and coming out with trainers and my Dad being £100 lighter.
