Mixed Football

Post by Clive Evans »

Now that they are doshing out gongs for mixed relay races and causing a bit of a stir. Why not mixed Football matches? 6 women and 5 men, perhaps allowing more women in the team but no more than 5 geezers. I don't Boris should be allowed to play, though.

Is he not very good? Or is it because you think he will rugby tackle someone?

I assume this is not a serious suggestion.

A typical misogynistic comment. This person obviously has some sort of hidden agenda. I would have hoped for a more enlightened debate. 60 years ago when we had a kick around in our local field, we had mixed sides, even as young teenagers. If the sides are balanced, it could be interesting. Probably not interesting enough for a National League. But could be a chance for another gong at the Olympics. Michael Johnson was quite dismissive of the mixed relays. But after he had actually watched a race or two, conceded that it was entertaining. It introduced an element of tactics. The same could be true of mixed Football.

Yes, Mike Johnson did concede that it was entertaining, but at the same time it didn't do the women any favours.

Sorry you considered my view misogynistic. I made no comment which could be interpreted as hating women. I also made no comment on mixed relays or other sports where the sexes are mixed. Football is a physical game, I just cannot see how male footballers are supposed to tackle females without thinking, "I don't want to hurt her". That's not misogynistic it's human nature.

West, I'm jumping in here which I don't normally like doing on a 'ping pong' argument , but here I'm making an exception. You were very quick to label someone as a misogynist even before you heard a reason to your question. It was simply pointed out to you the physical differences, between the sexes, that's all. No need to call someone a woman hater for that. No doubt you posted this for a reaction and you got it. But your response in this was ridiculous as well as insulting. And all really out of nothing.

The wimmin's world champions got beat by a regular under 15 boys side....

It could work if the mens part of the team were handicapped accordingly.

For instance a mixed competition could involve 7 women and 4 U-14 men in a team, which might be a fair enough match. Probably some might complain, but if a sponsor got behind this and games were televised, allowing more women to turn pro, would it be so bad? The mens side play enough games already, and women and kids not enough so it would be good for all.

Perhaps few grounds would be up for staging this type of match, assume you would need 2 sets of male/female changing rooms.

... Or you could handicap the men like you do with horse racing. Tie a ten pound weight around their waists somehow, for example.

Surely that wouldn't be necessary. If you limited the number of men or women allowed on each team, you would get fair teams. 5W+6M vs 5W+6M regardless of any other handicapping would produce fair teams.

It would be fair in one sense, in another sense it'd be not as good to watch.

If both teams 6 guys were allocated to the midfield and forward positions in a 4-4-2. It would become more akin to basketball where most attacks lead to a goal. Corners and set pieces would also break down into a strange set of guys marking guys and girls marking girls, not just for the size advantage but some of the grappling seen at corners in the mens game would be problematic to deal with if it was on different sexes.....

Without putting in kids the rules would have to change.

Some people on here, really do women a disservice; are you saying that the ladies game is full of powder puffs? They don't try as hard as the men? It would after all be balanced it wouldn't be 11 women against 11 men it would be mixed teams. Don't forget in a lot of the " macho " sports, women have only competed in very recent times. I wonder how some of you guys would fare against a woman boxer? I don't think this will ever happen tomorrow, but I am saddened by how some people still see women as the " fair " sex. It will be interesting to see if mixed relay teams, gradually start to improve women's running times and lead to a narrowing in the gap between men and women's achievements.
