Life in L2
Despite poor results I’m strangely enjoying life in League 2
Looking forward to the game at Northampton. Last time there for me was a sodding cold night, can’t remember the competition but vague recollections of Palmer scoring in the away fans end. Mind you the memory ain’t what it was. Remember the cold for sure.
Nice to be playing in L2.

The only time I've been to Northamptons ground it was thick fog and I really thought it was going to be called off , it wasn't and I left after a boring 85 minutes of rubbish football to do that awful trek to the station , we scored the only goal in that last 5 minutesdOh Nut wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 5:13 pm Despite poor results I’m strangely enjoying life in League 2

Brisbane road often feel like a rectal examination. If memory serves its easy to park at the Northsmpton ground and there are some decent eating places nearby. So do I get stuffed before the game or during, or both.Article_50 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 5:26 pm dOh Nut, you probably also enjoy visiting your dentist and gynaecologist![]()

Re: Life in L2
It's all relative. If we'd just been relegated to this division we'd be hating it, and yearning for trips to Sunderland, Ipswich, Bolton & Coventry. Big grounds in big places.
But yeah, it feels palatial and historic compared to Fylde, Sutton, Borehamwood et al

Re: Life in L2
The quality of opposition is better than when we left it IMO. The style of play is refreshing after 2 years in the NL. The worst of teams in L2 would be competing at the top of the NL, if they were allowed to play a bit of football. We have certainly noticed the step back up. Salford have struggled too.

Re: Life in L2
I agree that it feels like this, but I wonder how much of this perception is framed by our grubby experiences of the last two seasons rather than any objective recollection of life three years ago (also: 2016/17 we were getting routinely humped and so the quality of what we saw may have seemed worse as a consequence)LittleMate wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 5:53 pm The quality of opposition is better than when we left it IMO. The quality seems to be better than a few years ago in my recollection. But after 2 years of NL perhaps it’s just we are just watching teams try and play football.LittleMate wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 5:53 pm The quality of opposition is better than when we left it IMO. That I’m looking forward to going to that hotbed of football, Northampton, sums up what a crap 2 years of NL. Pleeeeeeeeaaase let’s not go there again, NL that is, not Northampton.

Re: Life in L2
My observation is based on the quality of coaching and play of the opposition. I just think there has been more of an attempt to pass and move with the ball from the teams we are playing. I'm certain that we are a stronger side than the team that exited the league, but time will tell that. I'm also hopeful that we will improve as the season goes on both through adjustment to the league and through a new manager.OyinbO wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 5:58 pmI agree that it feels like this, but I wonder how much of this perception is framed by our grubby experiences of the last two seasons rather than any objective recollection of life three years ago (also: 2016/17 we were getting routinely humped and so the quality of what we saw may have seemed worse as a consequence)LittleMate wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 5:53 pm The quality of opposition is better than when we left it IMO. Re: Life in L2
Totally agree with this. Generally teams come to Brisbane Road to play a bit of football rather than to stop us playing. Opposition forwards are certainly much better than the average NL forward line. And the standard of reffing is different class to the majority of NL jokers we have had to put up with in the last two years.LittleMate wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 5:53 pm The quality of opposition is better than when we left it IMO. Refereeing is a good point. So much better in L2. Plenty of rough stuff in the NL went unpunished.

Re: Life in L2
Definitely, despite our poor results it's so refreshing to be watching decent football. Swindon's pass and move was great and you couldn't begrudge them the win even if it's hard to watch your own team given a lesson on the pitch.
No qualms with being beaten by better football but losing to some of the assault off the ball last season was incredibly grating.

Thought the ref Saturday was worse than National league standard. Not once did he give a free kick for all the grappling and shirt pulling.

Fair comment but overall it’s a sight better.Tom Chance wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 8:42 pmThought the ref Saturday was worse than National league standard. Not once did he give a free kick for all the grappling and shirt pulling.

Re: Life in L2
Fitness levels are definitely higher - in previous 2 seasons we could match or better opposition in this area (especially part timers) - this season seems to be another matter - 5 of our players flat on their back at the final whistle, 1 from Port Vale.

Re: Life in L2
That is not a great indicator of tiredness. It probably has more to do with frustration/despair at not going on to win the game, or despondency at the result generally.LeytonOstone wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 3:58 pm Fitness levels are definitely higher - in previous 2 seasons we could match or better opposition in this area (especially part timers) - this season seems to be another matter - 5 of our players flat on their back at the final whistle, 1 from Port Vale.

Re: Life in L2
I suspect that when things ain't going so well, the feelings of fatigue hit home quicker, understandable. Though I was concerned to see Coulson puffing like an old carthorse early on at Salford when we were doing OK. That had me worried. Kept a closer eye on things since then and I do question our fitness. But lets see after a run of positive results, may look very different.Red_Army wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 4:03 pmThat is not a great indicator of tiredness. Re: Life in L2
Coulson is the player who seems to be struggling most with the transition, and it looks physical rather than technical: i.e. he suddenly looks two stone heavier and five years older.

Re: Life in L2
Its a worry. Skill wise he is well up to league two. But he does seem a little slower. I hope that once our defence is sorted he wont be wasting energy trying to cover areas others should be doing an can concentrate on his own job. We may well see the Coulson of old. Running himself ragged at the moment and its taking its toll.

I agree. It feels great to be back in the EFL. With all due respect to the National League, we’ve had our look around but don’t want to go back there again.
