Things to do up north

Post by Long slender neck »

I am contemplating a trip up north. Any suggestions for family things to do(suitable for young children) that would not be far off the A1?

York is a lovely place to go to with attractions for kids (if you have any, if not just grab someone else's). Nice walks around the old town walls and through the medieval parts of town. Good pubs and food outlets.

North York moors for walking and seeing some lovely open moor views. Coastal towns vary in quality, Staithes is lovely, Whitby is OK and Robin Hoods bay is good. Personally, I'd avoid Scarborough (kiss me quick and grubby) and Bridlington.

The Dales are beautiful with too many lovely villages and small towns to mention. Moorland but also rolling hills, some open rock faces, rivers and about a zillion miles of drystone walls. Fantastic scenery and the sheep are friendly too. If you like walking this is heaven. Great beers and great food too.

Bon chance.

But more seriously, BoniO's suggestions are pretty good. Preferred Robin Hood's Bay over Staithes personally, maybe it was just worse weather.

Rotherham , at this time of year is a delight. A gentle stroll with a loved one through the town centre, an ice cream in The Drippity Cone, then off to the South Yorkshire Transport Museum. Finished off with a romantice evening meal in Akbars ( BYO ).

Yes I'll be traveling along most of it, although not at your speeds. Looking for stop offs to break up the journey.

The South Mimms services is as far north up the A1 ad you need to go. It goes downhill after that.

One tip. If you buy booze in a supermarket make sure no one under 25 is anywhere near you. For some reason they thought I was buying an semi-expensive bottle of wine for my student son and wouldn’t let me purchase it until he proved his age. Happened when he was 18 in Leeds and now 20 in Nottingham. Not like I was buying a bottle of diamond white.

Wollaton Hall in Nottingham is a good day out, especially if there is an event on. Deer roaming around and you can pretend you are the caped crusader as it doubles as Wayne Manor in the movies.

Yep had a weekend away in Newcastle with young kids - one of the highlights of their childhood was a trip to the Beamish Museum.

Took in the Railway Museum at York on the way up there.

Don’t forget to play The Fall’s “Hit The North” on repeat in the car journey up there, to get you in the mood, Caca.

Not sure what other new advice to give, really. You “stopping off” overnight or for an hour? Oh, Leeds is ace & The Royal Armouries museum worth a look.

The Angel of the North is impressive, and you don't even have to slow down - just look right about a mile after you pass Washington Services.

Get a haircut in Sunderland. My wife asked if they did perms and they replied " I wandered lonely as a cloud..."

Yes will need to find somewhere to stop overnight about halfway.
