Being retired I do a lot of work in the local community. I have made wheelchair ramps, handrails, stairs and done various repairs for just the cost of materials or in some cases blagging the materials from local builders. I also run the Patients group at the medical centre and sit on several NHS committees. At my local football club, Whitehawk FC, I do all the maintenance work, although they do give me a free season ticket every year. Giving back to the community is not just a slogan if you have the time you should pitch in.

Mainly maths Max. Sometimes English, history and geography but to be honest I had to refresh this but not too demanding at that level. The biggest thing was getting used to the methods used to help the children. Methods focus on their understanding of ones, tens, hundreds etc so, for example, multiplication broke down numbers before starting. Long winded but better for youngsters apparently.

My focus often was helping one-to-one the children who struggled with maths. Believe it or not I have endless patience with youngsters struggling with stuff and the feeling when they passed was awesome, nothing like it.

I’m all for teachers and assistants getting decent pay. Especially as my daughter is one now. But it seems, certainly in the junior school I worked, they positively encouraged people to get involved. Sometimes just to listen to the children read, sometimes as with me to help out with lessons. A community sort of thing to get people involved and interested. Nothing wrong with that, healthy.

Not taking anybodies job. Just an extra pair of hands willing and able to provide a tad more for the children. And at no extra cost. I felt privileged to be able to help.

That is a good point. During my time there the checks went from the simple criminal records check to one that also included immediate family members. Thorough and rightly so. I was fully briefed in H&S and other requirements including how to deal with tactile children and signed a declaration that I had read and understood the contents. In addition one-to-one sessions were conducted in full view of other people, both as a precaution for the child and indeed for the helper. I was made fully aware of the risks to teachers too, from a malicious child. Very professionally handled.
