Best Display by a Visiting Player at Brisbane Road

Post by Forty-Niner »

My vote goes to Carlos Valderrama, capped over 100 times by Colombia.
His wonderful display of passing skills has never been matched, in my opinion, at Brisbane Road.

Jack Grealish was on loan playing for Notts County a few years ago. He stood out.

Yes. Remember Grealish. We absolutely battered them. But he was the best player on the park by a mile.

Ollie Palmer, a name not to be mentioned by many on this forum, the same people who rubbished him week in week out when he was with us.
Couldn't hit a barn door they said, well he hit the Os ''Barn door of a goal twice in a few minutes when coming on as a sub against us didnt he !!
Did his detractors make mention of it after the match ..NO... a strict silence was quite noticeable !!

As to performances I remember from visiting players, two stick in my mind, first one was Peter Thompson around 1962 then at Preston North End. I think it was an evening game, so long ago job to remember but looking records up this seems to be the game, e.g Friday 09 Feb 1962
Leyton Orient 0 v Preston North End 2. Anyway, remember Peter Thompson putting on a dazzling display of left wing play and Stan Charlton was trying to mark him ! Soon after he moved to Liverpool at the age of around 21 years old, magic player who suffered a lot of injuries many of which were down to rough treatment from the defenders of the day.
Another player who stuck out to me was the wonderful Welsh centre forward, Ron Davies. Saw him play at the Os when he was at Portsmouth ( I think it may have been an FA cup game ? ) what a header of the ball he was. Unfortunately he was did not get to play for one of the really top clubs till he joined Manchester United in 1974 and by that time he was around 33 years old and his best years had gone. History in Wikipedia records that he was lethal in the air and ''players resorted to playing the man rather than the ball.'' Another forward of those days who received many injuries because of the all to frequent fouls inflicted on him.

Lee Steele for Shrewsbury. They were a very poor side when we played them, but Steelo took us on single handed. I think he scored a hat trick. Although we got a drubbing from a poor side, it was a pleasure to watch him. Pity we didn't sign him earlier.

First game of 1977-78 Orient 1 Blackpool 4
Bob Hatton got a hat-trick in about 10 minutes

The result flattered them and it was very odd that we ended up relegating them on the final game of the season following out 1-0 win at Cardiff

Clive Walker - Orient 3, Chelsea 7 in 1979.
Absolutely ripped us apart down the wing that day in a game that could actually have been a 7 all draw!
Still a wrong 'un, though!

Some really good calls on here. The grant/lambert I remember well . We had just signed colchesters star centre half , can’t Be sure but think it was white , but he remained static with his hand in the air claiming offside while that pair raced past him and put it in the net.
Clive walker in the Chelsea game which we could have won. Paul went was badly injured and walker just ran past him with ease. Another standout was Tommy Johnston when he played for Newport before we signed him, and David platt playing for Carlisle.

Maybe not best display, but Lee Frost (Chelsea) had the game/day of his life at Brisbane Road on 10th November 1979. Scored a hat-trick, but hardly scored or played for them again.
