Hot cross buns

Post by Currywurst and Chips »

It’s that time of year

Other than butter what’s a decent topping for them?

I've only ever heard of them with butter. Do people really put other stuff on?

My wife doesn't get the buns out until Good Friday, then it's with butter and cheese.

Butter and raspberry jam. Then you dip it in a mug of tea with two sugars.

I detest raisins and sultanas and the like, but when I was a youngster our local baker used to make the most delicious hot cross buns without these foul additions. Having now returned to the village I grew up in ( where the same baker is still going strong) I was eagerly anticipating a hot cross bun feast. The buns still look exactly the same on the outside, but the b*stard's only gone and filled them with shrivelled grapes. Hugely disappointing

Nothing. Butter is enough. Hot Cross buns are one of those foods where any degree of fancying around, and trying to be special, just ruins them.

Shame he didn't remember you and bake a batch of fruitless buns. It's emblematic of falling standards of customer care in this decaying society.

Fantastic use of a "glut" - I go out and buy a glut several times each spring.

Ha - Mrs Spike detests raisins and sultanas (especially sultanas - she calls them "slugs"). So she prepares the buns for the aforementioned HCBB&B Pudding, and when doing so, she picks out the juicy little buggers from one end of the dish. These are mine while I prepare the eggs and cream mix.

Decent ones require no additional topping or infiltration. That is all.

Mrs Gold has returned from foraging at M&S with Lemon Curd filled HCB's. At 316 calories a pop it's a risk I'm willing to take.

The M&S Blueberry ones are lovely. Sure they used to do a marmite and cheese one as well that tasted a bit like a massive twiglet

I always find these rather underwhelming, but I’ll still eat them if they’re around (with just butter - and lightly toasted if they are on the dry side). I can’t be doing with those Mr Kipling Hot Cross Pies though. Sounds to me like Big Pie Co are just using up the left over Xmas Mince Pies by putting an X on the pastry lid.
