January transfer window

Post by PKM »

The picture looks somewhat different to the one a few months ago with three of our loans coming good, notably Josh Keeley but Donley is now showing what he can do and Perkins has also contributed well.
With Clare’s return, albeit still at least a month of match fitness, we look to have strength in depth in defence and defensive midfield.

Assuming Hemming returns to Boro and Currie to Oxford that frees up a further loan spot, assuming we wish to stick to 5 loans.
Hopefully Keeley, Donley, Perkins and Kelman will remain for the season , and maybe even one of them might sign permanently, if the twinkle in RW’s eye is anything to go by.

So we will need

1.Left back

2.At least one winger, RW has suggested two

3.Would like to see another forward in & not a no league games first loan premiership <21 loan where it will take the rest of the season to get him up to scratch.
Need someone who can hit the ground running. That is a tall order for a forward position. Needs a Jack Currie in the forward dept, that’s a tough one.

Are we going to try to push on for a play off spot? The window may reveal the desire the board have for that, although, tbf, losing £3m-£4m this season is indication enough of their incredible commitment to Leyton Orient.

Maybe we should sign up Kyrell Lisbie before Posh snaffle him up!
Ok, unlikely to ‘hit the ground running’ but could be a good addition to the squad

Would be happy if Perkins goes back to help bring in 2 wingers. I’m not sure why he’s being included in terms of loanees coming ming good.

Scored a brilliant overhead kick the other day. He's on very little at Braintree and if he's on a contract (some are some not) it's only until the end of the season, this could be a good shout Braintree are keen to get rid of players to cut the wage bill ATM. That said I have watched him half a dozen times this season and he drifts out of games for long periods. Think Ritchie will be looking for EFL experience.

Perkins has certainly contributed over the last couple of months, don’t think many would disagree there’s been a big improvement in his contribution. And who’s to say that he won’t continue to improve?
I’m more than happy for RW and the coaching staff to decide, they see him every day, in training etc.
Let’s be fair, a lot on here would have binned Donley off a few months ago, know he looks integral to the team. Not saying the same will happen with Perkins, but it indicates to me RW and staff are best placed to judge.

As much as we have improved, the playoffs is still a stretch. If we were to make the playoffs and somehow go on to get promoted, not sure we would be Championship ready. Unpopular as it would be, as an owner, if Galbraith and Agyei won't sign a new contract and are going for nowt at the end of the season, perhaps if a decent offer is received it should be considered. If they don't go, no praise will come reigning in for keeping them, just the usual abuse that any signings we do make will be substandard.

This is what ML said yday pre-match in the hospitality suite:

" ML & RW are currently happy with the number of players available to play in defence and those in midfield: They will be targeting replacements for Theo and Jordan in January as both players are out until next season. ML would not be lead on whether anyone is identified yet."

Shaq Forde came to us with just NL experience.
I was thinking of KL fitting in the Nigel’s desire to buy in young players and develop them. KL may not be able to provide us much this season, if we went for him. On the other hand OON just had league of Ireland experience and made an instant impact.

As much as who comes in will anyone be going out the other way?

Hemming - mutual agreement to end loan?
Howes - not sure if he's got to play, free to find a new club?
Currie - will Oxford recall him?
Obiero - the Coventry rumour from a few weeks ago gone quiet but you never know
Galbraith - will we get any offers?
Agyei - as Galbraith, especially with his contract up in summer

That's a 50% miss rate, Perkins has overall been sub-par imo

Wellens comments yesterday suggests again that Keeley will be joining permanently. I'd personally send back Perkins and Hemmings so that we have space for two loanees to come in, to go alongside a permanent winger being brought in. Two loanees in that situation would be another forward and an additional winger. I can't imagine there's budget for much more than that and as much as I'd like a senior no.10 to challenge Donley, can't see that happening. A permanent winger is a must as that's the one part of our first 11 that you feel is a bit lacking at the moment.

I really doubt we sell Ageyi or Galbraith in January. The fees we'd get for them vs what they are worth to us make a transfer unlikely, though I guess with the option to extend Galbraith's deal we could probably ask for a decent amount.

I've said this before but it's worth saying again . We must break the bank to keep Galbraith and Agyei . I have no confidence we could adequately replace either of these two .

Indeed though we've already given them multiple offers from what I recall being said in interviews. Sign on fee and big wage increase for a Championship or even top L1 side would be tempting for both.

I should probably drop Kelman into that list as well, wonder what plans QPR have for him going forward.

Offer Ethan a three year deal on good pay and a reasonable release clause, suits both parties, if he goes then the club get good money

Need to start doing this with all the better players, accept anyone that is too good will move on but the club must ensure they get decent money for them

We shouldn’t break the bank for any player. Every one is replaceable. Every few years we lose a players who’s “irreplaceable” and then we replace them.

To be honest ,I don't think Kelman is Championship standard so I think there is a good chance Rangers will release him .

He's not even a regular starter for Braintree. Seen him a few times, seems like a good kid, but not L1 level.

It’s quite amusing to me that people seem to be under the impression that any signings of note will be made in Jan.

It’s equally as amusing that suddenly Donley is seen as a nailed on first teamer because he has had a couple of half decent games (4 months into a loan period).

Perkins is the one who has actually shown some sort of improvement since his naff start. I’d keep him for the rest of the season because we ain’t going to find anyone better for free (which is the budget we’ll be working with)

Signing Keeley on a permanent will be the extent of the noteworthy transfer activity in Jan.
