He was quality today. Injects real impetus into the side with his pace even if his final product lacks. Hoping the injury isn’t serious

What next, Alabi top of the "nearly scored" charts
This post aged well
Point still stands about the pointless stats, a goal (or assist) is what counts and he did that today with the help of some epically bad goalkeeping

Surely you're smarter than what your post represents. Goals are created through key passes. It means he's creating the most of these chances therefore goals should be more likely overall when he's in the team. It is a substantial stat.

Does it say that it's counting only key passes that lead to goals? If there's no goal at the end it's nothing more than an "oooh" moment for the crowd. We had plenty of those last game but ended up losing.

Today he did more and had a shot which led to a goal, so by rights he should have an assist to his name. Let's stick to counting stats that actually count for something.

At the moment he’s under utilised.
Tell me a game he's changed. I'm struggling to think of one myself.

You're missing the point completely. I never said that all the passes lead to goals- re read it. What I'm saying is it reflects his final choice making. If I were manager and I was comparing two number 10s I'd pick the one who created the most chances (the main job of a number 10). It's also an endorsement that he's making the right choices with the ball - more so than others playing in the same position.

You do realise that there is a certain element of luck, both good and bad, in scoring/not scoring goals right? Assists are not necessarily a great barometer of whether someone is driving play.

You can look at it two ways I guess. Do you want the player that's "driving play" as mentioned above but nothing comes of it. Lots of dribbles, some passes but no cutting edge. Or alternatively the guy who picks one cross but puts it on the bonce of the striker for a goal.

Some goals are lucky like today's OG but someone like, say, Jobi there's a lot of quality and precision in how he picks his final ball.

Glad to see Brophy take the shot on today as he's been reluctant to do it. He took the gamble today just get something on target to work the keeper and it paid off. More of that please.

I get this, but even with the precision of McAnuff's crosses or passes there is still an element of luck on whether the ball ends up in the net. Take Ling's superb cross to Wilkinson against Stevenage (I think). That's not Ling's fault that Wilkinson totally cocked up such a peach of a cross. He doesn't get credited with an assist because of his team mate's frankly poo attempt at going for a dangerous cross.

(I'm not saying Ling is a play driver btw, just using it as an example).

It’s amazing then just how lucky some players are, those that score regularly at the highest level. Lucky devils.

I agree. Sometimes have a shot rather than faff about. I thought he had a good game.

Yes at first given as Brophys goal on the Orient twitter then changed to an own goal by Neal in the 87th minute. I said several posts above that in seasons 1-1 draw and today's 1-1 draw, deja vu that in both games, own goals by Salford in the dying minutes to give us 1-1 draws.

Yes, we know as you said exactly the same in two threads already.
