Orient Palace 1982 - FA Cup 5th Rnd

Post by Admin »

Scary to think this was 42 years ago. For me it was the start of a rapid decline after 12 years in Div 2 (championship to those sub-30 boarders). Relegation followed 2 months later after a horrific end to the season and 3 years later an unthinkable drop into the unchartered waters of Div 4.

Although I was barely in my teens, 82-86 was a pretty grim period for football all round with low attendances almost everywhere, Bradford and Heysel. Sub 2,000 crowds at Brisbane Road on more than a few occasions and from memory consecutive 1-5 home defeats somewhere around 82-83 to Bristol Rovers / Newport.

Obviously, this will all mean nothing to young guns like Dunners though.

I'd just about managed to forget that Moores penalty / moonshot.

The week before the Palace game, Orient were 13th in Division 2 with 27 points having played 23 games. This after only taking 5 points from the first 10 games.

Out of the next 23 league games, Orient won only twice more taking a measly total of 12 points from 69 available and were relegated in bottom place.

I was at that game, and remember most of those players clearly. However, I have zero memory of Jimmy Hallybone - even the name doesn't ring any bells.

I remember this. Moores penalty miss was the trigger for an appalling late season collapse from the Os. I seem to recall he was the current London player of the month when he played in this match.

As for 1982 - I remember that crazy month of results
28 Sept Huddersfield 6 Orient 0
2 October Orient 1 Doncaster 0
9 Oct Reading 3 Orient 0
16 October 1 Newport 5
19 October Gillingham 4 Orient 0
23 October Orient 1 Bristol Rovers 5

How bad must Doncaster have been??

Miraculously the Os stayed up with a total of 54 points having won final home game

No we were not. The Os got 54 points and despite shipping 88 goals stayed up by one point in the season I referred to.

I remember a Friday night game in 83, when it rained so much the handful of Wrexham fans ( I think it was against them) who were behind the goal let a WPC under one of their 🌂 umbrellas. Less than 2000 crowd if I remember rightly Tought times.

I remember him being ‘affectionately’ known as Jimmy Lazybones by the wags in the West side, which to a very young kid was hilarious.

Plus the punch ups, the pitch invasions and the lumps of debris thrown over the back of the South terrace by the away fans upon leaving the ground. Grim times indeed.

I really didn't like that season.
Being moved from the North terrace to the South willy nilly. Still can't remember why.

From memory, I seem to recall we were winning 1-0 in one of our 1-5 home defeats. Indeed one of our worse seasons and not many supporters of any club, let alone the O's, can say they have seen their team lose 1-5 at home in the space of six weeks or so
