Is a bloated infrastructure killing the playing budget?

Post by PKM »

Last annual report we had 248 employees, the expenses/admin was £9.8m and the losses £3.9m
How much of the £9.8m is the playing budget? £4m? £5m?
Can’t think it’s anymore than that.
Who are the 248 that work for us? It seems helluva lot
It works out at c £40k/year average over the 248
Ok, admin will include stuff like rent/rates/utilities etc
But, on the face of it, those numbers don’t look great.
Are we really getting value for money here?
Going back in time I don’t think the O’s employed much more than 30. Ok , times have changed, but 248?
And I’d like to know what % of that £9.8m is the playing budget.

Presumably it includes stewards doing 3 hours every other week and academy coaching staff doing a couple of hours a couple of nights per week?

From memory it was just under 2 million playing budget in League 2, around 3 million or so last season then upped again this season so probably 3.5 ish?

I think this is only part of the problem. The real problem lies with the FA and the formation of the Premier League. This has led to ridiculous salaries for players, managers etc that are only sustainable because of commercial rights and huge injections from abroad. Football will eventually reach a saturation point when the seemingly bottomless pit is bled dry.

The last thing the Premiership seems to think about is the long term future. Saturation of tv coverage of the same old teams is becoming boring and repetitive. It’s not a question of if, but when this all collapses.

The Government Tzar could help with this but until there is a wage cap imposed (as is the case in Australian rules football) the future of the EFL is effectively doomed. A major war in the Middle East could destroy the wealth of so many sponsors of the Premier league, then what? Many Premiership clubs have huge debts under written by sponsors. Ticket prices are already beyond the reach of many people yet the FA goes on in its own sweet way, adding further matches, all to ;satisfy their greed. A direct result of this was to kick EFL clubs in the b…s by removing replays in the FA cup. This wouldn’t even effect the Premiership clubs but for us and others lower down a replay could be a life line for us. Yesterday’s match should have been subject to a replay that would probably attracted a crowd of 3-4k. Our last FA cup tie against Arsenal, that ended in a draw gave is a replay at the Emirates stadium resulting in a huge (for us) pay day.

We need to act before it’s too late.

Exactly. We can keep blaming RW, RT, or Ling, or the players, but the problems for teams like us begin with what is an unsustainable model that depends on people willing to lose money as a hobby. It's ridiculous and it only benefits big teams.

£3.5 million last season & went up to 4 million.
Travis said a 10% increase so just over £4 one would think. Oxford won promotion with a small £7 million spend according to the figures published at the end of last season

Don't forget the doctors, not like we'd get games potentially called off or face fines.
LOFT could always pay them I suppose

You wouldn’t think they had receptionists as I cannot remember ever getting through by telephone.
