Banning it would force the state offering to be improved overnight.
How ?

Yes. Will more money suddenly appear. Will more schools be built. Will better teachers be found. ? Nothing will change.

Let’s go with your sweeping generalisation, George.

‘In the current state’ - so, how do we get them out of their current state?

Yes. If there isn’t an opt out option for those with power, influence and money, then yes, more money will suddenly appear.

We don’t need to build more schools. We (kind of) have enough schools for the amount of children in this country. It’s just some of them have lots of funding and others don’t have enough.

Yes. Paying a decent wage and improving working conditions overall would attract better candidates and also motivate those currently emoted.

Smart thing to do is pay for private tutoring instead and get them into a decent grammar

Then you save long term on fees and can still say your kid goes to a state school at middle class dinner parties and they worked really hard to pass their 11+

Ok. But we have always had private schools and we used to have (70s80s) good state schools . It isn’t that simple is it. And if you have ever tried to get your child into a state school you would appreciate that it is not always that straightforward. How would you have fewer kids in classes without more capacity

So then we need to ban private schools completely. That will never happen. We are way beyond that making a difference. Ill educated children become ill educated parents who produce more ill educated children. The mistakes in education, lack of funding , can be traced back to the last century. It will take another 50 years to pull it around if changes were made now. Putting VAT on private school education is vindictive

I went to grammar school in the 70s but I do have 4 grandchildren in private school. I also have a brother in law who heads an academy looking after a number of state schools.

Sending your kid to prep school is a good idea if you can afford it. Not only does your kid get the best education there are a lot of other subtle benefits too.

For example, it prevents those awkward moments when they’re at a birthday party and they want to give your kid something terrible like sliced white bread for lunch

1.5bn was laid out to agencies in 22/23 to send in supply teachers to replace those on long term sick leave. That will take some motivation to get them back to work.

Don't you have to pass an intelligence test to go to a grammar though?
