How far back are we comparing ‘the left’?CEB2ElectricBoogaloo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 7:50 pm I’m sure that the left never used to be this nuts on this stuff. Like, this is how the righties would characterise the left, but it wasn’t actually like this.

To give it a genuine answer, what I mean is that in the 90s, I feel like most “pc gone mad” stories (no, not an officer losing his rag and shooting someone), if you followed them to source, were mischaracterisations of more moderate realities. There *were* the mad lefties, akin to the modern parents in viz, but they didn’t have much sway culturally.
It feels like now, the more nutty takes that get reported actually *are* as mad as they seem to be, even when you trace them back to the source.
You’re not gonna like this, but I reckon the time when things tipped over into “yep, actually a bit nuts” was 2015, when Corbyn became Labour leader and some of the nuttiest people successfully portrayed themselves as the most exciting future of the left, and a lot of older people who should have known better actually took them seriously

Really? Another armchair Police critic. Who do you call in time of trouble? The Ghostbusters?Max B Gold wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 1:40 pmI would have been fair before voting to convict the killer for a cold blooded murder.Yanzi Gravy wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 11:43 amNo. Glad you were not on the Jury.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 1:53 pm
They shot an unarmed suspect in the head at close range. Was there really no other alternative to a street execution?

He’s on a wind up, yanzi.
A wind up that’s about a millimetre from his actual point, but he’s been put right on things he’s wrong about so often now that he does this minuscule exaggeration simply because his ego can’t stand being demonstrably wrong as often as he is

I'd say from when "the left" typically looked like this:Hoover Attack wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 2:26 pmHow far back are we comparing ‘the left’?CEB2ElectricBoogaloo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 7:50 pm I’m sure that the left never used to be this nuts on this stuff. Up until "the left" looked like this:
Re: To Serve and Protect
The clue is in the title of this topic. To serve and Protect. If the poor innocent driver of the vehicle had not been stopped and driven away at some ridiculous speed and hit a group of children coming home. Killed them you would rightly have thought why didn’t the police stop this man when they had the chance. If they had perhaps my child might be alive now. Likewise if another police officer had been killed. These are judgements in split seconds. Not something a little keyboard warrior would be doing or reporters or even some very silly politicians trying to gain favour with fringe groups. Kaba should take all the blame. now looking back at some of the posts from when this happened so should politicians and activists trying to twist matters for their own agenda

Modern Parents, Millie Tant etc - people like that must have held enough sway if Viz were producing those strips in the 80s and 90s.CEB2ElectricBoogaloo wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 2:33 pmGood question.Hoover Attack wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 2:26 pmHow far back are we comparing ‘the left’?CEB2ElectricBoogaloo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 7:50 pm I’m sure that the left never used to be this nuts on this stuff. I don’t think things have changed as much as you’re making out, it’s just people have more of a chance to get their takes out there for all to see and hear.

Re: To Serve and Protect
I think those characters were very much around - in an “everyone knows someone like that” way, but it’s also that just as you rightly say that we have more opportunity (seems like the wrong word) to see them and their takes, they also have the same opportunity to find each other and kind of organise politically along those lines. And it only takes a few well placed people in an organisation to completely change the culture of it
