Similar to Alan Partridge’s take about prisons and holiday camps, it depends on the point they’re making at the time.
Suffice to say, I’ve seen both Rocky Horror and Mrs Doubtfire referred to as both
A: disgusting cis appropriation of trans experience
B: an example of how TERFs are so backward! lol people could handle Rocky Horror in the seventies! They loved Robin Williams in women’s clothes in the nineties! But now, for some reason you don’t want a trans woman as the female in charge of a girl guides camping trip!

That's not quite the same, but it depends.

In real life Richard III wasn't a woman trying to be a man for some entertainment value, so a woman playing the part of Richard III wouldn't be "problematic" cis appropriation of trans experience.

But, there have been instances of women playing the part of a typically male character, usually for no other reason than the gimmick of the gender swap. In such an instance the gimmick must be celebrated as a "stunning and brave" retelling of this character through the female lens. But try reversing that gimmick and you'll soon find out (see also race swapping).

Having seen countless shows where this gimmick is deployed, it never actually adds anything of value to the story or performance, so f*ck knows what we're supposed to be celebrating.
