Len Cheesewright

Post by MayIPooOnYourKnee »

The Steve Foster on steroids of his day. He was chief scout under Tommy Taylor when we had 40 odd players in a squad. Can only presume he helped bring in players like Sasha Opinel, Emmanuel Vassuer, Nicolas Forge. But for every Gavin Holligan there was a Ahmet Brkovic. Every Scott Oakes there was a Wim Walschaerts.

Great man, great scout.great name.

His biggest single payment was £300 from Spurs when Campbell signed as an apprentice. Cheesewright had three spells with Orient and 12 years with Spurs.

Not to mention he brought in Ledley King as a kid. Who left us to go to Spurs....for nothing.

By coincidence with your post I was at Braintree vs Bishops Stortford on Saturday, bloody awful game that Braintree sneaked due to a scrappy early goal. I sat in the stand and about 10 minutes before kick off a guy came and asked if the seat next to me was free - it was . He was scouting for Ipswich and asked me if Braintree were at full strength said I wasn't too sure as I normally go to the O's. He said Oh OK that's my team all our family are O's. We then had 2 hours of mainly Orient related chat, he was an apprentice at the O's in the 1970's but never got any further but has worked at a lot of clubs as a coach and it became obvious that was the case as we chatted as he knew a lot of the staff who were there at the O's at that time and afterwards and did some coaching for Patsy Holland at Spurs, we had a chat about Len Cheesewright who he said was a really nice bloke and highly thought of and brought a lot of really good young players into the O's

The scout was a really nice bloke and chatting with him made the time pass a lot quicker as the game was really grim.

It’s such a great proper football name.
Reminds me of Champ Man 01/02, too

They were down to the bare bones, think they only had 2 on the bench.

Didn’t realise until just now that Steve Castle was now manager at Bishops Stortford.

Just occurred to me that there’s Orient related names that’d reflect what the world would be like if Essex decided to colonise the medieval world - Steve Castle, Keith Fortt. Can anyone think of others?

Braintree ended up with 3 on the bench they included the goalkeeping coach Michael Brothers - Yep good move for Castle as Stortford are potentially a bigger club than Royston. They were good defensively but poor up front but even at Midland South level they had one player on International duty!
I would back Castle to get them up in the next couple of seasons.

Not sure how old they were but - assuming they’re young enough - thought their 7 had a bit of edge about him and liked the 10 too although needs to beef up a touch.

Dont know when he left Royston but Pizzaman was at Sudbury last season for a bit.
