Didn't seem to affect El Miz last season or Paul Smyth the season before. It's down to the quality and character of players brought in, a bunch of youth loans don't have it.Chief crazy horse wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 1:36 pmWellens took us from the 4th tier of football to the 3rd tier and many on here ever since still have him standing on the highest pedestal. It was an experienced side with a lot of league experience under their belts
Of the starting 11 there’s only Donley that would qualify as a ‘youth loan’.
The back 4 and holding midfield were very experienced .
With the exception of Agyei, we were lacking experience up front, although Kelman has racked up quite a lot of games.
I think where we were lacking is options on the bench upfront, beyond Perkins , who has yet to show anything of worth
Presumably he must look good in training, otherwise why continue to put him in the match day squad?

Kelman still ahead of him in the goal tally this season at probably a quarter of the wages...Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 2:30 pmTell gshaw that !!

You must be around the only person on the forum still supporting Kelman.
Three season in a row Ruel scored goals for the Os and how many goals did Kelman score over that same period of time ?

Donley

O'Neill
That's 4 with not a lot of League football between them, towards the end of the game all are on the pitch. I'm also talking about the games early in the season where we've given up 4 games with a squad average age of 22 (I think that was the number quoted in one of the interviews)
Also despite his number of games Brown comes under that naive younger player category for me too, he was carried by El Miz last season imo and now being exposed. Watching that goal it's telling Clare had just gone off, it gets stopped at source if he's still on the pitch either by a tackle or a tactical foul.
O'Neill seems to be struggling this season too which is strange given how he hit the ground running initially. Again lack of options mean we can't really take him out the lineup.
You make a very accurate point about lack of options on the bench. It's bad enough now with our two first choice attackers starting so we'd be in really trouble if either of them are out for any length of time. Similar story at LB where Sweeney hasn't been able to adjust to this level.
People talk about budget but last season we started with 4 pros up top and the squad hasn't bloated in any other areas so how are we now suddenly unable to afford them?
Kelman still our top scorer at the moment, Agyei much as I like him needs to do more.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 2:50 pm Different clubs and Ruel missed a few games due to injury.

Thing with Ruel he bundles a few goals from the bench then suddenly people think he's a starting quality striker, at which point his poor holdup and passing come into play. Definitely not worth the wage he was demanding, I doubt we pay anyone £6k a week let alone an impact sub.

I agree with your overall point, but it was an experienced side that started yesterday, but were broadly in agreement, other than Perkins never got in the pitch yesterday.

Last season he played plenty of games in the starting 11 and was praised by Richie for his work rate at closing down defenders. He scored goals and does not matter how they go in and OMG how we need a goal scorer at present !!gshaw wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 2:58 pmPerkinsPKM wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 2:04 pm Thing is yesterday we didn’t have a ‘bunch of youth loans’ on the pitch

Re: Exiles thread - Lincoln C (A)
Can anyone see a reason why Donley is "highly rated by Tottenham", I haven't seen anything.
Also, who of the signings since last season have made any positive impression? Clare, Currie, possibly Ball and Kelman at the start of the season, anyone else?

Not to the level of hype they've put on him. My Spurs supporting friend was shocked when I said Donley has been pretty poor so far. Don't think it helps when their blogs are putting out headlines like "Spurs concerned League 1 may be too easy for Donley"Jeremy Bentham wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 4:29 pm Can anyone see a reason why Donley is "highly rated by Tottenham", I haven't seen anything.

Clare - looked so-so at RB but been a revelation in CDM, only problem is now we're back to the problem of last season where we only have one decent LB and one decent RB in Currie and James
Currie - the LB we needed at the start of the season, shows how far off the required level Sweeney is
Kelman - started brilliantly but seems to have gone off the boil a bit, trouble is we can't keep him or Agyei fresh as no-one else to take their place. Can't fault his effort so hope he gets back on the goals again.
Ball - a bit too early to tell, seems promising but need a stable midfield of Clare, Ball, Galbraith for a run of games
Hemming
Jaiyesimi
Perkins
Donley
Warrington
(Keeley)
All of the above not performing to the standards required thus far. The last one hasn't had much opportunity and because of the shambles of two loan keepers we can't even get him in the squad.

I’m watching Spurs on TV at the moment and they look good…….Donley isn’t good enough but then with better players surrounding him he may be. I like Clare in his new midfield role but as everyone is saying it’s our strikers where the problem lies. Perkins, even in his cameo has been disappointing. If he’s the back up to Kelman and Agyei then God help us.Jeremy Bentham wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 4:29 pm Can anyone see a reason why Donley is "highly rated by Tottenham", I haven't seen anything.

Sweeney would have won that header.

It seems at every set piece the players look to the bench to be told what to do,if they played off the cuff more and took responsibility for themselves would we do better

We are constantly trying to bring in players that are attached to either premiership or championship clubs perhaps we should try and set our sights a little lower and look at league two or NL as there are plenty of hungry players there. Mansfield for example brought in Evan’s from Newport and has started banging ing the goals for them.

Good idea. Worked well for Os when they were relegated to the National league and got Bonne in from Division Two Colchester !Monkey Boy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 9:55 am We are constantly trying to bring in players that are attached to either premiership or championship clubs perhaps we should try and set our sights a little lower and look at league two or NL as there are plenty of hungry players there. Many of the players we are getting from higher league teams are near to youth players, not strong or experienced enough to play in Division One.

I don't think I've seen Perkins even have a shot yet, including in pre season, bit embarrassing from a recruitment point of view.Cheshunto wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 5:54 pmI’m watching Spurs on TV at the moment and they look good…….Donley isn’t good enough but then with better players surrounding him he may be.
