Re: Shawn's parents think sentence too lenient
My understanding is that at the time of the murder, given their ages, the maximum sentence would've been 13 years. Bizarre that these killers, from very different backgrounds, end up with identical minimum 8.5 years sentences. The Judge was a bit odd referencing one of them having dyslexia (as though this is some kind of mitigating factor), like kids with dyslexia are more likely to be swanning around carrying machetes in public. Also, she wasn't wearing court dress. Why not??

Re: Shawn's parents think sentence too lenient
But as this was a criminal case, I thought wigs were a standard requirement as they're symbolic of the seriousness of the case? Failure to wear one would surely be disrespectful to the court. It seems too much attention has been paid to the comfort of the murderers, so you end up with a Magistrate looking more like a social worker...

Re: Shawn's parents think sentence too lenient
None of us are parties to the full facts of this case but it seems to me from what we do know that too much mitigation has been given to the perpetrators of what is a shocking murder. I agree that the dignified public face of his parents is exemplary and that the sentence does not match the seriousness of the actions of the murderers. Dyslexia doesn’t normally affect the individuals ability to judge right from wrong and it doesn’t provide mitigation to such serious actions. This needs reviewing.

Much of this is down to out of control and anti social problem children having children themselves, result being the troubled children produced following in the ways of their parents.

These 12 year olds were more street wise and savvy than their 19 year old victim. They are wrong uns and dangerous. All the pussyfooting around by the judge
dressing down is an example of the ridiculous soft justice this country dishes out. These feral kids need locking up for 30 years so their evilness can be extracted through the passage of time. The poor lad victim was a fish out of water. Had no chance.

These revolting creatures will be out by the age of 20, and then no doubt supplied new identities, council housing for life etc etc; all provided in this liberal, lobotomised, utopia we now dwell in.
No second chance for the victim or their family of course, but the authorities care not, it's all about making sure the murderers are okay. The victims count for nothing. Their life Means nothing, to the authorities.

Re: Shawn's parents think sentence too lenient
A bit of an over-simplification. In this case, child A had a very tough upbringing with no indication of parents in his life & was known to the police for carrying weapons. On the other hand, child B was evidently from a relatively stable, loving home with no history of police interaction.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 7:14 pm''an example to the trash masquerading as many parents these days''Pagan Orient wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 4:44 pm My understanding is that at the time of the murder, given their ages, the maximum sentence would've been 13 years. Which makes it difficult to comprehend how both sentences were reduced down from 13 years. If the Judge asserts that both unstable & stable upbringings are mitigating factors, in what circumstances would the 13 years be imposed?

Re: Shawn's parents think sentence too lenient
Maybe the judge reduced one sentence because the kid was from an unstable background, the other sentence because that kid was incredibly easily led ?
I've not followed the case so don't know if one were more the instigator than the other, but I'd hope the judge was following the case.
Maybe the judge decided that the prisons were so full of soup throwing activists that she had to relieve the pressure a bit?

If that's the reasoning, I get the logic. Still begs the question under what circumstances does the maximum possible sentence get imposed in full.

They won't be serving their sentences in prison, obviously. Take your point though, we do need more prisons...
