Last Night's Ref - AN Amazing Fact

I thought the referee last night had a pretty good game and was one of the better referees we have seen for a while. He allowed the game to flow, used a fair amount of common sense in not falling for the usual tricks and he did not brandish cards like confetti. Of course, no referee can get everything right!!

On closer examination, he looked familiar and I suddenly realised it was Daniel Middleton, the same guy that refereed arguably one of the most important wins in the club's history. The near promotion clinching 2-1 win at Sutton United in 2019 where he sent off James Dayton who had just been assaulted and was laying on the ground with 'his leg hanging off'. I don't thing in the thousands of games I have played in and watched that I have ever been more incensed by the incompetence of a referee. At the time, everyone was saying this bloke should never referee a game again!!

It just shows there is hope for everyone, even referees!!

Let's be charitable and say Middleton made a bad mistake at Sutton . However since then he has learned by his mistakes and improved .

Thought he made a few mistakes- PB players were throwing themselves on the floor and he often gave them a free kick. Also their right back should have got a second yellow for fouling ONeill

Best refereeing performance I've seen at Orient in a long time. Really wanted the game to flow and never quick to blow his whistle

I do worry about our fans sometimes.

I don't normally engage with some of the usual suspects on this board and I try and only post more positive stuff. However as this particular character Hoover Attack is worried about me, I will make an exception just this once as I have an hour of downtime.

I am guessing this character has never played the game, never refereed a game and doesn't realise how good players are at simulation, play acting etc etc. Has he (or she) any idea of how much pressure managers, players and the crowd put on one person?? Yes, sometimes referees can drive us all mad with their perceived 'power rushes' or get it badly wrong. But now and again, maybe, just maybe it is good to dish out some praise when maybe it is appropriate.

Or maybe, just maybe the 'sh@t then and sh@t last night' comment is just some sort of perverse 'wind up trip' which apparently can happen on here??

I've made this point elsewhere already. There was a directive, maybe a season ago, to allow a bit more physicality in the game. I'm all for that.

However, you can not double handed push an opponent. Nor can you hit an opponent square in the back, between the shoulder blades, with your own shoulder. This happened multiple times last night and the ref ignored it.

What I would say in his defence is that he was consistent - he allowed both sides to get away with it equally, so the players knew where they stood. (There were only a handful of occasions he pulled players up for it, one of which was a proper old fashioned shoulder to shoulder in front of the TJS - think it was Ollie - and sent their full back flying, only to blow his whistle). I would guess this clown has never played the game at any level and therefore has no concept of what's fair and what isn't.

(For the record, yes I played a little bit although admittedly some time ago now).

The original post is a good call. However, the fact that he awarded PBO a penalty must mean that he's not to be trusted.

But at Sutton he awarded us the penalty. How many times would the ref have given in favour of the keeper during such a tussle of arms and legs?

I thought the ref did ok. Got conned now and then but generally let the game flow and I thought the game was better for it.

I can’t watch the Premier League anymore due to the blatant cheating. I didn’t see too much of it last night and a bit of physicality is all part of the game.

id rather a ref like last night who lets some physicality go that by the book might be foul than the majority of them who give a foul if a player goes down knowing he's going to get a foul if his sleeve gets brushed. I think most people would too.

Some people seem to get easily confused about the difference between a "shoulder tackle" and a straightforward "barge". One is Lawful the other isnt. Weird.

Four of us were watching and all said why was that a penalty? He dived and got it.
I'm impressed with the O's, one of the best teams in L1 this season again. They work their socks off.

Peterborough continuously had 6ft 3inch blokes crumbling to the ground at the slightest touch and the ref fell for it every single time. Hector K being a prime suspect.

There was also some point in the first half where he blew for a Peterborough free kick but then changed his mind + played on. Proper bizarre.

He also needlessly stopped play during an Orient attack because a Peterborough player was rolling around on the floor. No suggestion that it was a head injury but still blew up. Then resumed play miles away from where it stopped.

Also, should he not have least booked Hemming? Can you seriously get away with wiping someone out who is clean through on goal and not get a card?

Guy was a clown when he sent Dayton off that day, and he wasn’t much better last night.

That didn’t happen tho. There were a couple of instances of players going down easily but that was it.

Hector K won at least 3 free kicks in this fashion. Some of their other big lads did as well.
