I've only got highlights and DD to go on, but I'm left with the impression that O'Neill and Aygei are still in 1st gear.

Re: Ratings
If you think about that brief period just after Christmas last year where we went on that amazing run, it coincided with Agyei being fit and playing through the middle. Think he is far more effect in that role as he has the ability to either be very direct in his play, or hold the ball up and bring people in from wide areas.
Hard to know how RW would have us shape up with Graham and Archibald fit - would that result in O’Neill and Kelman being relegated to the bench or does he see Agyei as a winger this season? Kelman has been fairly lively so far…

I honestly couldn't tell you what our first XI would be if that were to happen - we've now got genuine competition all over the pitch. I reckon Graham and ONeill get the nod if we play with wide men, but couldn't call it between Agyei and Kelman if just one up top.

Re: Ratings
Wellens likes inverted wingers but Graham seems like (based on the limited number of games he's played) like a traditional out and out winger who likes to whip a ball in after getting towards the byline.
Agyei has the inverted wingers role before so I'd imagine Wellens preference is for him to get used to playing out right, Kelman in the middle and then O'Neil or Graham on the left. DJ seems like an odd signing seeing as he's not been deemed good enough to start and allow us to play Wellens favoured formation.

It's not about whether Agyei can play out wide when we have the ball (he can, although I prefer him through the middle), it's whether we can get him fit and disciplined enough to play the role without the ball.

Re: Ratings
Did I hear Wellens correctly in his interview say that Graham wanted to come off soon after being put on??? As for Dan A he looks like a man that wants to get away to me. He seems to want to take on the whole team when he has the ball. Interesting to see if he puts in a performance against Brentford to put himself in the shop window? Unlike Gailbraith who is putting a shift in every game.

Re: Ratings
Playing inverted wingers does not make for free and flowing attacking wing play, notice Southgates England playing with that style and hardly any decent crosses being whipped in. Dan A is still in 2nd or 3rd gear yet. I think it is the role being asked of him does not suit him, we shall see but would like to see Os playing using traditional style of wing play, even swap sides of wingers, do something different and please in January, get a decent centre forward in and if Perkins does not shape up by then, well send him back. Looks like the on loan left back is decent, but will Oxford want him back in January ?Monkey Boy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 11:39 am Did I hear Wellens correctly in his interview say that Graham wanted to come off soon after being put on??? Re: Ratings
Spain won the Euro often set up in a 4-4-2 formation and slinging in crosses with wingers playing in the traditional style. Portugal beat Scotland recently slinging in non stop crosses by wingers playing in the traditional way. It varies club the club. Fact of the matter is that you get a better cross from the wing when the winger centres on the run on the outside of the fullback and not having to cut in to centre,Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 1:05 pm Man city, Madrid and Spain all play with inverted wingers, but sure.

Spain were 4-4-2 out of possession, 4-3-3 with the ball. Yamal and Williams were both cutting in all the time onto their stronger foot. Really can't think of any successful team at the moment that plays orthodox wingers.
We don't even have a forward who's good in the air, so we wouldn't even have the players to go old fashioned.

Imagine watching the Euros and concluding that Spain won it by "slinging in loads of crosses" akin to Jack Charlton's Ireland.

Lamine Yamal was cutting in from the right wing onto his left foot but the left player was crossing using his left foot and also ran in and scored with his left foot.Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 1:35 pm Spain were 4-4-2 out of possession, 4-3-3 with the ball. Spain are not playing the tiki-taka era football anymore.Proposition Joe wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 2:09 pm Imagine watching the Euros and concluding that Spain won it by "slinging in loads of crosses" akin to Jack Charlton's Ireland.
''Spain’s run of 136 competitive games with more possession than their rival — going back 16 years to the 2008 European Championship final — has finally come to an end. Croatia had 53 per cent of the ball in Saturday’s opening Euro 2024 game of Group B, but Luis de la Fuente’s side won 3-0.
It is tempting to view the end of that incredible statistical run as a pity — especially given it spanned historic victories for Spain at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. Instead, many inside and outside the Spain camp celebrated losing possession to Croatia as the long-overdue modernisation of an outdated and increasingly unpopular style of play. Since taking charge of Spain following the 2022 World Cup, De la Fuente has spoken a lot about making his team more “vertical” or direct. It has been a theme throughout media appearances in the build-up to this tournament in Germany, with player after player saying they would avoid keeping possession for possession’s sake. “The philosophy has always been similar but each coach has their own touches,” Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri told The Athletic at the country’s pre-tournament camp. “(De la Fuente) wants to be a bit more direct, using possession always to damage the opponent. You have to change the chip (our approach).”

Re: Ratings
Think you're misremembering things. Williams is a right footed winger primarily and cut in loads. He's a classic inside forward or inverted winger, whatever you want to call it. He's very talented so is able to play with both feet, but he mainly was coming back onto his right.
Cucurella was overlapping loads as a left footed left back, but that's sort of the point of playing the way Spain and most teams doing a 4-3-3 do - the winger cuts in and the full back provides the width by sticking to their natural foot. In Wellens ideal world, that's what our full backs would be doing, which is why he made a big deal out of wanting more athletic full backs this summer, so we actually had the pace to stretch teams like that.
