CEB’s drawing & painting thread - contains nudity!

Obvs piss taking welcome, but anyone interested in digital painting specifically (or more generally in drawing/sketching) is very welcome to ask anything, or get some pointers if you are interested in drawing.

I pretty much exclusively use procreate for digital painting. There’s probably other apps that outperform it in functions, but I’m so used to how procreate works, its UI etc that I can’t really get on with anything else. Yeah, I’m using the apple pencil

Original post is still quite low resolution, so uploaded a crop where you can see more detail, eg the vein just below the surface of the skin, the fact that the nipple is inverted etc

The wrist is good. The detail of the mole, vein and skin stretched over bones, along with a few wrinkle lines makes it look very realistic.

CEB is there any AI involved in this kind of art? The reason I ask that is because l am a dinosaur when it comes to this kind of technology.

No - there are a lot of people now using AI to wholly generate their art, or to augment it using something called “generative fill” where machine learning can extend an image or fill in the gaps of an image with something it guesses fits.
Most people who paint digitally (especially those who, like me, use it as just another media, like pencil or oils) are completely against AI in creativity; it effectively means the artist is “commissioning” the art from a machine.

The video above is forty hours of painting, with every brush stroke turned into a frame of video; the full length video is an hour long, I sped it up to under five minutes, but if you’re interested it’s worth a look, as you can see every brush stroke (up until the last hour or so’s work, after which the file was too big to export, so it’s missing the detailing of the hair, above and below

No, but if you are offended by racism and don't want to read racist comments, then don't read it

Depends what you mean by “same level” - my oil painting skills aren’t incredible, my acrylic painting is better. I can get the same level of likeness and detail in pencil drawing.

The main difference - and what allows for the level of detail - is that the “digital canvas” can be as large as you want, so it’s possible to work on fine detail more practically.
So if I were to draw this in pencil, I’d need to be working at a large scale - say 20 x 27inches - to get the level of detail here.
The other difference is that with digital you can rework as much as you like, not having to think ahead as far because nothing is permanent unless you want it to be. It kind of means you don’t get happy mistakes and the artwork can sometimes be cleaner looking than I’d like (it feels contrived to kind of add in roughness)
