Walthamstow updates
(if anything happens at all, that is)
Maybe worth having a thread separate for local updates etc.
Haven’t yet decided whether to join up with the counter protest or not - seeing mixed takes on this, as well as getting an impression of some people itching for a ruck (but could well just be social media bullshit)
Interested in opinions as I haven’t reached one yet - I took part in the counter protest when the EDL attempted to march through Walthamstow, and that was a great show of strength of community (albeit with a few travelling ‘black bloc” types who were completely there for a fight and disappointed they didn’t get one)
But on this occasion it feels a bit like the calls from the police for counter protestors to stay away actually has merit - if the thugs are specifically there to riot and to attack property and people, counter protestors could well make effective policing more difficult.
Any thoughts?

If you do go and if no fascists turn up, encourage people to go home. Remember if you do go, don't leave on your own if there have been fascists about as they may recognise you.

Just walked past that spot. Heavy police presence and a lot of people milling around, but no sign of any racist thickos so far. Really can't see anything happening there, but it's rank that people are even having to prepare for the possibility. Everything boarded up on that stretch of Hoe Street

Re: Walthamstow updates
If the police are saying dont go, then dont.
Maybe the right want to provoke a counter gathering and are hoping to paint it / it turns into a riot.

Re: Walthamstow updates
Given some of the scenes I've seen in there at 2am on a Saturday, I was quite surprised to even they had closed up.Brigs wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 5:56 pmI bet MaccyD's isn'tMistadobalina wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 5:48 pm Just walked past that spot. Re: Walthamstow updates
Scale of police presence suggests they're worried about something happening. But quite a few kids/young men in balaclavas turning up makes me a bit worried this will kick off even if no racists show, it definitely seemed tense.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 6:02 pm If the police are saying dont go, then dont.

Re: Walthamstow updates
You could go along to help out OB by making a few citizen's arrests if things turn nasty

Re: Walthamstow updates
My daughter who as at Uni in Brighton went to the counter demo and sent some pictures. She counted 6 fascists all surrounded by the old bull. Hundreds on the counter side. She expects the police will load them into a mini van and bus them out for their own safety.
Re: Walthamstow updates
Let's hope those present follow all police advice and it's a peaceful and trouble free evening for everyone.

Despite my best efforts, I just can't get the crowd to shift in the direction of the film memorabilia shop.

Re: Walthamstow updates
Many years ago we had the EDL turning up to protest in Aylesbury (the white widow Samantha Lethwaite is from here). The whole town turned up to protect the town & acouple of streets near the mosque. We peacefully saw them off
